Defensive struggle finds Hounds on wrong end of 5-4 loss to Lake Erie

INDIANAPOLIS – 16 days ago, head coach Jillian Howley and the Greyhounds ran away with a 16-6 victory over Lake Erie College, Howley's former squad.

Sunday, however, the Storm (6-6, 4-4 GLIAC) slowed the pace of the game, shutting out UIndy (6-8, 4-5 GLIAC) in the first half to flip the script and knock off the host Hounds, 5-4.

In an opening 30 minutes that only saw a total of eight shots on goal between the two teams, LEC finally turned the dueling scoreboard zeros with a Hana Abu-Kwiek goal at the 00:38 mark.

A common theme on the day was UIndy's inability to successfully clear the ball, and the length of the Storm's defensive pressure from their offensive end. Indianapolis amassed 21 turnovers on the day, and converted just 55% of their clear attempts (11-20).

Greyhound goalie Irene Carlquist, who had been doing a much better job of protecting the ball and beginning the offensive clears as of recently, struggled with the constant Storm pressure. Lake Erie was able to force five turnovers from the UIndy goalie.

The two teams alternated four goals apiece in the second half, neither team able to string multiple scores together. Chalane Morrison scored twice for the Greyhounds, while Anna Rulapaugh and Erika Mackenzie each added a goal.

Mackenzie's goal at the 16:54 mark in the second half marked the first score of the day for UIndy, the longest such scoring drought since the Hounds were shutout by No. 3 in the season opener.

Lake Erie's ability to maintain possession of the ball in the final three minutes of play was enough to ensure the UIndy equalizer wouldn't occur.

The road doesn't get any easier for the Hounds. They'll host eighth-ranked Grand Valley State on Friday, who has yet to drop a game to a GLIAC opponent.
