INDIANAPOLIS – For the first time in four years as members of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, 11th-ranked Grand Valley State entered Friday night's game against UIndy on the heels of a conference defeat.
The Lakers (9-4, 7-1 GLIAC) had their 20-game winning streak against GLIAC opponents snapped last Saturday in a 16-15 overtime loss to Tiffin. Their hunt to get back in the win column would take longer than anticipated, as thunderstorms delayed the start time of Friday's game for nearly 90 minutes.
Unlike the first meeting between the two teams where GVSU jumped out to an early 5-0 lead, UIndy (6-9, 4-6 GLIAC) tallied the game's first goal less than a minute in on
Hana Priddy's first of two scores.
The Hounds kept it close early, but five unanswered Laker goals broke a 2-2 tie and helped give Grand Valley a 9-4 halftime advantage.
GVSU stuck to the same game plan as Lake Erie a week ago and pressured the Hounds relentlessly on rides. Again the Greyhounds struggled clearing the ball, converting just 45% of their clear attempts (10-24) compared to a near-perfect clip for the Lakers (13-14).
Indianapolis would turn in four more goals in the second 30 minutes, but it wouldn't be enough to counter a 35-shot night from GVSU.
Chalane Morrison and
Sydney Hauffman each tallied hat tricks, and UIndy converted 11 shots on goal into eight goals.
UIndy will close out the regular season with a pair of road games next weekend against Tiffin (Apr. 29) and Findlay (May 1).
