Hounds celebrate Senior Day with sweep of Truman

INDIANAPOLIS – The No. 2 UIndy softball team notched a pair of wins on its annual Senior Day Saturday. The Greyhounds (44-3, 25-3 GLVC) started the day with a special recognition of its senior class, and went on to hand visiting Truman (27-15, 19-9) losses of 5-1 and 3-2, with the latter featuring a walk-off home run by Tayler Weck.

Prior to first pitch, UIndy honored its seven senior student-athletes and their families. Cherise Boyd, Morgan Foley, Erika Goodwin, Cassie Reed, Miranda Tamayo, Jenny Thompson and Coryn Tirpak have combined to help the Hounds to a 190-39 record the last four years, with the resulting .830 winning percentage the highest in any four-year span in program history.

GAME 1
Facing the Midwest Region's eighth-ranked squad, the Greyhounds cruised to a 5-1 win in the opener against the visiting Bulldogs. Foley (32-2) was unhittable for most of the game, striking out 11 versus two walks. Only one batted ball got out of the infield through the first six frames – a lazy fly to center in the fourth.

Foley's bid for a seventh consecutive no-hitter was broken up with one out in the seventh inning when Truman sophomore Ashley Murphy got a hold of one for a home run to also end the shutout. It was too little, too late, however, as Tirpak came on in relief to quietly retire the next two batters and secure the win.

The Greyhounds scored the bulk of their runs with a four spot in the second. UIndy put each of its first five batters on base without the benefit of a base hit, with Brooke Riess and Cassie Reed earning RBIs on a hit-by-pitch and a walk, respectively. Katie Kelly capped the surge with a two-run single up the middle.

For good measure, Thompson cranked her sixth home run of the year with a solo shot to left in the sixth. The Greencastle, Ind., native finished 2-for-2 with two runs, a stolen base and a sacrifice.

GAME 2
Foley got the starting nod again in game two, emphasizing the regional importance of Saturday's match-up with Truman. But unlike the previous game, the Hounds' All-America pitcher got in some early trouble, walking the first two batters before Murphy's double put the home team down 2-0. Foley scattered to rest of the Bulldog base runners, however, giving the Hounds a chance to come back.

UIndy got one run back in the fifth when Riess led off with a walk and later came around on Kelly's single.

Still down 2-1 in the bottom of the seventh, matters looked bleak when Reed grounded to second and appeared to make the second out. However, UIndy head coach Melissa Frost alertly appealed to the umpire after Truman neglected to notify him of a reentry. The ump agreed and sent Reed back to the batter's box for a second life at the plate. The Washington, Ill., product made good by coaxing a walk, bringing Weck to the dish as the potential game-winning run.

Weck fell behind after taking strike one, but the junior shortstop squared up the next offering from TSU's Kindra Henze, depositing it over the left field netting and onto National Avenue. The two-run bomb was the fourth of the year for Weck, her first of five career blasts to be of the walk-off variety.

Foley (33-2) finished with 10 strikeouts in game two. Her K of Murphy to start the third inning was god for her 400th of the season.

The Greyhounds remain in the Circle City to host a doubleheader versus Quincy Sunday starting at 12 p.m. ET. The team will also welcome back a number of former Hounds as part of its annual Alumni Day festivities.
