INDIANAPOLIS – On the final date of the 2016 regular season schedule, UIndy softball pitcher
Morgan Foley continued a dominating senior year, shutting out Quincy University with her fourth no-hitter of the season Sunday. The performance kicked off a doubleheader sweep of the visiting Hawks, whom the Greyhounds also bested in game 2, 12-3.
Â
Under perfect weather conditions, the all-around happy day was made even happier by the return of 27 former UIndy softball student-athletes as part of the program's annual Alumni Day. Among former Greyhounds in attendance was Wimp Baumgartner ('57), former player in the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League for which the UIndy softball field is named.
Â
GAME 1Foley (34-2) was masterful in the opener as she faced just three over the minimum, with three walks accounting for the Lady Hawks' only baserunners. The Louisville, Ky., product sat down each of the game's first 12 batters on the way to 13 strikeouts, zero wild pitches and zero hit batsmen.
Â
UIndy did not sustain any long rallies offensively but instead chipped away with single runs in the first, third, fourth and sixth innings. The Hounds still showed some pop, however, as the latter two frames featured solo home runs, with
Cassie Reed hitting her third dinger of the year, and
Jenny Thompson going yard for No. 7 and her second in as many days.
Â
Natalie Lalich finished 2-for-3, including an RBI single, Reed added a pair of walks, while
Katie Kelly and
Erika Goodwin each had a single and a run scored.
Â
GAME 2The Greyhounds bats torched Quincy pitching with 12 runs and 16 hits in the capper. UIndy put multiple base runners on in every inning, and five Hounds had multi-hit games.
Â
UIndy overcame a two-run deficit with a five-run third inning, then broke it open with three runs in the fifth and four more in the sixth. The final blow came off the bat of freshman
Emma Varsbergs, whose two-run bomb in the sixth invoked the run rule to prematurely end it. Her blast scored Lalich, who smoked a two-run double earlier in the frame.
Â
Foley got the pitching win in game two, working 3 2/3 innings of relief to move to 35-2 on the year. Senior
Miranda Tamayo got the start, giving up two runs (one earned) and striking out three in 2 1/3.
Â
Sophomore
Jessie Noone finished 3-for-4 at the plate with two runs, a double and a sac fly. Kelly had a two-run single, Varsbergs scored three times and Goodwin had two singles and two walks.
Â
The Greyhounds finished the regular season with a 27-3 mark in conference, one win shy of the program record. They earned the No. 1 seed in the upcoming GLVC Championship Tournament, which starts Friday, April 29 in East Peoria, Ill.
