EAST PEORIA, Ill. – Behind a no-hitter from ace pitcher
Morgan Foley, the top-seeded UIndy softball team (48-3) remained in the winners' bracket at the 2016 GLVC Championship Tournament with a 2-0 shutout of fifth-seeded Truman (29-17). Foley racked up 12 strikeouts against just one walk on the way to her eighth career no-no.
Â
The No. 2-ranked Greyhounds advance to day two at the conference tourney and will face third-seeded Southern Indiana Saturday at 2 p.m. ET (weather pending). Truman, meanwhile, drops to the losers' bracket and will play an elimination game versus six-seed Bellarmine at 12 p.m. ET.
Â
The eight-team, double-elimination tourney is being held at the Eastside Centre in East Peoria, Ill. Friday through Sunday.
Â
The Greyhounds handed the Bulldogs a third loss in a six-day span. After sweeping a doubleheader versus the Bulldogs in Indy last Saturday, Foley sat down 21 of the 22 batters she faced, with only three hitting the ball out of the infield. TSU senior Whitney Richardson worked a leadoff walk in the third inning as the only barrier between Foley and her first career perfect game.
Â
The performance also marked the second postseason no-hitter for Foley. The previous one came in the last May in the opening game of the 2015 NCAA Division II Championship.
Â
Offensively, the Hounds had multiple base runners in four of the seven frames. They chased TSU starter Kelsea Dorsey (14-9) early with a walk and a pair of extra-base hits the top of the third inning. The biggest blow came from junior
Tayler Weck, as the Greyhound shortstop blasted a solo home run to lead off the frame, her fifth homer of the year.
Â
The Hounds tacked on another run in the fifth. After a bunt single by
Erika Goodwin and a Bulldog throwing error, catcher
Jenny Thompson found a hole in the left side to drive in Goodwin with the game's second and final run.
