INDIANAPOLIS – Under rainy conditions at Key Stadium Saturday the No. 17 men's lacrosse squad fell to No. 4 Mercyhurst, 10-2, in the regular season finale.
The fourth-ranked Lakers (12-2, 7-1 ECAC) secured the Eastern College Athletic Conference regular-season championship with the win, and pushed the Hounds (8-5, 5-3) into a logjam with a few other 5-3 ECAC programs.
Mercyhurst scored the game's first three goals, blanking UIndy during the first 15 minutes to carry a 3-0 lead into the second quarter. Connor Enright led the visitors with two first-period scores.
UIndy finally got on the board near the 10:20-mark when
Eric Lounds put away a goal on an assist from
Matthew Johnson. But the Lakers scored twice before the half was completed – including a score with just 5 second on the clock – and led 5-1 at the halftime intermission.
The visiting Lakers scored the first three in the third quarter, running their unanswered goal total to five, making it 8-1.
After being shutout in the third quarter, UIndy scored again when
Parker Kump netted his team-leading 33rd goal to bring the Hounds within six, 8-2.
Mercyhurst closed with the final two marks of the game, and continued its impressive defensive effort. The Lakers held the Hounds to a season-low two goals during the 60 minutes of action.
The Lakers out-shot the Hounds 43-28, and despite an even 8-for-16 face-off total, seemed to maintain possession for much of the contest.
Greyhound freshman
Jarod Kimble totaled 10 saves in-goal for the game.
UIndy now awaits the outcome Sunday's showdown between Lake Erie and Wheeling Jesuit to see if it qualifies for the ECAC Tournament. The Greyhounds are in the field with a win from the Lake Erie Storm, but are out if the Wheeling Jesuit Cardinals win. The year-end conference tournament is a four-team, single-elimination playoff hosted by the top seed.
