Top-ranked Hounds blank Prairie Stars to move to 38-1

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – The No. 1-ranked UIndy softball team shut out Illinois Springfield twice Saturday, topping the host Prairie Stars 10-0 and 2-0 at Land of Lincoln Junior Olympic Softball Complex. Senior pitcher Morgan Foley earned the win in both halves of the doubleheader, striking out 23 in 10 2/3 scoreless innings.

UIndy moved to 38-1 overall, including a 21-1 mark in Great Lakes Valley Conference play. UIS fell to 16-24 and 8-14 in conference.

GAME 1
UIndy used three big innings to cruise past the Stars, scoring three in the second, three in the third and four in the sixth. Sophomore Brooke Riess delivered the only extra-base hit of the game with a three-run double in the sixth inning.

Riess, who also added an RBI single in the second, was one of three Greyhounds with two hits in the game. Junior Natalie Lalich and freshman Emma Varsbergs each amassed a pair of singles and a walk, with Varsbergs adding two ribbies. Freshman outfielder Taylor Podschweit made her first start since February, compiling a single, a walk and a team-high three runs scored.

Foley (28-0) took care of business in the circle, allowing just one hit and striking out six in four innings of work. Fellow-senior Coryn Tirpak completed the shutout, tossing two scoreless frames to finish the game.

GAME 2
Tirpak got the start in game two, and though she did not allow a run in 2 1/3 innings, she surrendered six hits in the short outing, including three singles in the third to load the bases with just one out.

Foley took over from there, fanning the first two batters she faced to end the threat and going on spin six more scoreless frames until her offense finally delivered the game-winning runs in extras.

With the score still knotted at 0-0 in the ninth, back-to-back singles from Varsbergs and Riess led off the inning to put pressure on the home team. A wild pitch followed to move two runners into scoring position, setting up freshman Taylor Podschweit, who notched her first career game-winning RBI with a sac fly. Katie Kelly followed with a double to add an insurance run.

Foley (29-0) struck out the side in the bottom of the ninth to secure the win, punching out 17 batters and walking just two. Her 29 victories to start the season are good for the eighth-longest winning streak by a pitcher in Division II history.

The Greyhounds venture out of conference play for a home doubleheader versus in-region Urbana Tuesday, April 12 starting at 3 p.m. ET.
