WESTFIELD, Ind. – For the second consecutive game, the Greyhound baseball team put their GLVC Tournament life on the line, taking on the Miners of Missouri S&T in another elimination contest.
Â
On a cold and blustery day at Grand Park, the Greyhounds charged out to an early five run lead before a charge put the Miners in front. In the end, it was a two-run seventh inning, combined with a stellar performance in relief from
Dylan Stutsman, that gave UIndy a 9-8 win and a berth in the tournament semifinals.
Â
Stutsman (6-1) recorded the longest outing of his career, giving up two runs on five hits with four strikeouts in six innings of work after the Miners recorded six runs off
Connor Mailloux and
Michael Schalasky in the first three innings.
Â
Colin Hawk went 3-for-5 with a solo home run, a pair of RBI and two runs scored.
Kyle Orloff also went 3-for-5 with an RBI and a pair of runs scored. UIndy improved to 34-19 on the year, earning a spot in the conference semifinals for the first time since winning it all back in 2012.
"Today was a real weird day," Stutsman said after the game. " I'm used to coming in late in games and giving max effort for one inning. Today, I had to keep a little in the tank so I could go multiple innings and it worked out. Our guys also played great defense today. had some guys make some huge plays in the field on a day where it was important to play good defense. We got a win we needed and now we have to keep a sense of urgency with another game coming up later today."
Â
The Greyhounds wasted no time hanging a crooked number on the board, scoring five times in the top of the first inning. Hawk opened the scoring with an RBI single and was followed by an Orloff RBI double, a two run single from
Brady Thomas and a
Dylan Jones run scoring base hit.
Â
But the Miners responded with three runs on three hits off Mailloux in the bottom of the inning to cut the lead to a pair. After stranding the bases loaded in the second, S&T took advantage of a Greyhound error to cut the lead to 5-4 in the third.
Â
UIndy re-claimed a two run in the fourth when
Anthony Asalon brought
Macy Holdsworth home with a sacrifice fly. But the two run cushion was short lived as the Miners answered with three runs in the fourth, putting S&T in front for the first time.
Â
But the Greyhounds didn't trail for long, rallying with two outs in the sixth to tie the game. Thomas and Joop started the rally with back-to-back singles, bringing Jones to the dish. After working a full count, the junior designated hitter ripped a fastball back up the middle, scoring Thomas easily from second base.
Â
After both teams went down quietly in the sixth, Hawk took the first pitch of the seventh inning and belted his seventh home run of the year to put UIndy back in front. Three batters later, Joop added the eventual winning run with a sac fly that brought Orloff home.
Â
The Miners cut the lead to a run in the bottom of the seventh after consecutive two out doubles. It was as close as they would come to tying or taking the lead, as Stutsman set down six of the final seven batters he faced to end the Miners' GLVC Tournament.
Â
UIndy moves on to the semifinals on Saturday, where they'll put their tournament life on the line against William Jewell College, who is unbeaten through two tournament games. First pitch from Grand Park is set for 6:00 p.m.
