Â
INDIANAPOLIS – Playing in front of their home crowd for the first time in 2016, the Greyhound men's soccer team snapped a two-game goalless drought on their way to a 3-0 win over William Jewell.
Â
The Hounds scored early in the first half and added a pair of insurance markers in the final 45 minutes to improve to 3-1-1 on the year and pick up their first GLVC win of the year.
Â
GAME CHANGER
Benjamin Sierra recorded the Greyhounds' first shot of the game in the 13th minute and it resulted in the game-winning goal. The Santiago, Chile-native corralled a pass from
Andrew Dunkin on the left side of the field and ripped a shot past William Jewell goalkeeper Quinn Ruggeri for his first goal of the year and the third of his career.
Â
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
The Cardinals recorded the first three shots of the game before Sierra's goal. After the opening tally, the Hounds controlled the shot clock, ending the game with 13-8 advantage in total attempts.
Â
Freshman
Javier Steinwascher potted his second goal of the year in the 49th minute on a great individual effort that saw him fight through a pair of Cardinal defenders to win a loose ball. Once he got to his feet, Steinwascher made no mistake in firing the ball past Ruggeri to make it a 2-0 game.
Â
Jake Meyer also collected his second goal of the year, adding the exclamation point in the 86th minute. Sierra launched a ball in behind the Cardinal defense to a waiting Meyer, who corralled the pass and fired a shot that went off the crossbar and into the net. The assist also gave Sierra his first career three-point game.
Â
Miles Palmer earned his second consecutive clean sheet and has not allowed a goal in either of his first two career starts between the pipes.

HEAR IT FROM THE HOUNDS
Midfielder
Javier Steinwascher: "This was a big result for us. We had a bit of a tough go at it last weekend and we had a great week of training to get ready for this one. We were able to pounce on them early and find the back of the net and that was big for us."
Â
Head coach John Higgins: "We were really efficient tonight. We were very clinical in the final third tonight and that was big for us. We hit a few posts and might have been able to tack on a few more but I'm really happy with the result tonight and we needed it after two really good performances a week ago where we couldn't find the net."
Â
"Our back six has taken a bit of a hit with some injuries lately and for us to get a clean sheet tonight is big for us. Credit to our guys for being really solid in our end and keeping William Jewell off the board. We always want to be at our best in our end and tonight we did a great job."
Â
"I don't think our guys are going to have any problem getting up for Sunday. Rockhurst is one of the best teams in the nation and we want to come out and give them everything we have on our home turf."
Â
UP NEXT
