Quick-strike offense propels Greyhounds to 2-0 start

ELKINS, W.V. – The Greyhound men's soccer team are off to their first 2-0 start in John Higgins' seven years as Greyhound head coach following a 5-1 win over Davis & Elkins College in their final non-conference game of the year.

After a fairly silent 35 minutes to open the game, the Greyhound attack grabbed control of the match with four tallies over a 22 minute span to put the game out of reach. Three Greyhounds - James Jenkins, Javier Steinwascher and Mase Koki - notched their first career goals on Saturday.

GAME CHANGER
The Hounds managed just two shots through the first 30 minutes of the game. That changed in the 36th minute when a fresh-off-the-bench Jenkins cashed in on a feed from Benjamin Sierra to put the Hounds on top. Not only was it the first career goal for Jenkins, but Sierra notched his first career helper on the play.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
Less than four minutes after he notched the opening goal, Jenkins potted the game-winner on an individual effort. UIndy would score on each of their first four shots on goal as David Kurz made it 3-0 in the 53rd minute and Steinwascher added to the lead in the 58th minute off a free kick.

Mase Koki capped the scoring for the Greyhounds in the 86th minute, chipping home a long through pass from Noah Zorniger for his first career tally.

Chris Jones was just 1:34 away from notching his first clean sheet of the year. The senior goalkeeper needed to make just one save to pick up the win.

Shots were 17-8 in favor of the Greyhounds and UIndy also held an8-2 advantage in shots on goal. Brad Shaw led the Hounds in both shots (five) and shots on target (three).

COACHES' CORNER
Head Coach John Higgins: "We had a little extra pressure on us today. We got a text from Braden Tamosaitis' dad telling us he was predicting we'd win both games on this trip. The guys didn't want to let him down today."

"We really felt like we put everything together for the first time with this squad. The first 45 minutes is probably the best soccer we've played this year on both sides of the ball. We really clicked as a group and that was really exciting to see."

"Our possession today was at the level that we expect and we made that count on the offensive end. We got a lot of great individual performances and that was huge in the team's success today."

"The first half was a really tight contest and it was going to take a special kind of effort to break the ice. We were able to turn to our bench and they helped contribute to a great first team goal. Once we got the first one, our depth and our execution was great the rest of the way."

"We've a ton of confidence going into the conference slate but we know we have to stay at this level because there aren't any easy ones in the GLVC. Friday night against Drury is going to be a battle and our guys want to keep this unbeaten streak going. So we think they'll be good to go come Friday night."

UP NEXT
UIndy kicks off the GLVC slate on Friday night, heading to Springfield, Mo. to take on the Panthers of Drury University. Kickoff is set for 8:30 p.m. eastern time.
