DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. – UIndy women's lacrosse suffered its first defeat of 2017, falling 14-7 at Mercy Friday afternoon in a non-conference contest in New York.
Mercy, playing in its season opener after posting a program-best 12 wins in 2016, climbed out to a 6-0 lead that proved insurmountable.
The Greyhounds (2-1) were led in scoring by freshman
Grace Gunneson, who finished with four goals and an assist in the loss.
The host Mavericks jumped on the Greyhounds early, netting four goals in just over four minutes to start the game.
Sophomore keeper
Irene Carlquist was called upon following Mercy's fourth goal, and the reigning GLIAC Freshman of the Year helped slow down the Mavericks attack with a handful of saves.
Down 6-0, UIndy took advantage of a Mercy yellow card with a man-up goal to finally get on the scoreboard. Gunneson converted a feed from classmate
Kailee King to make it 6-1 with just under seven minutes remaining in the half.
Barely two minutes later, Gunneson added her second goal of the day, but Mercy closed out the half with another late score to make it 7-2 at the break.
The Mavericks scored early in the second period, but Gunneson quickly found the back of the net on UIndy's next possession, completing her third hat trick in as many games this season.
After winning another draw control, UIndy got on the board less than 30 seconds later when
Kelly Pinkerton scored on a free position shot, cutting the deficit down to 8-4.
UIndy continued to inch closer, pulling within 10-7 after King's and
Chalane Morrison's first goals of the day, and Gunneson's fourth.
But that was as close as the Hounds would get, as the Mavericks reeled off four unanswered to quell any comeback bid from UIndy and secure the win.
The Greyhounds coughed up 26 turnovers – more than their first two games combined – and lost the ground ball battle 25 to 16.
Carlquist finished with 12 saves in-goal for UIndy, and defender
Riley McClure led the team with four ground balls.
Offensively, Gunneson finished with five total points, and now leads the Hounds with 12 goals this season.
UIndy's road trip continues Sunday, when the Greyhounds travel to face St. Thomas Aquinas in Sparkill, N.Y., at 11 a.m.
