Hounds earn split at Midwest Crossover

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The 18th-tranked UIndy softball team spilt a pair of contests at the Midwest Region Crossover Friday. The Greyhounds (7-4) defeated Saginaw Valley, 3-2, in dramatic fashion in the opener before falling, 5-3, to Kentucky Wesleyan. The 13-team event is being held at Deaconess Sports Park in Evansville, Ind.

UIndy 3, SVSU 2
In a rematch of a 7-1 UIndy win just seven days ago, junior-transfer Julia Liceaga delivered her first walk-off hit as a Hound. With the score tied at 2-2 in the bottom of the seventh, the Joilet, Ill., native sent a ball through the left side, scoring Cathy Skaggs from second with the game winner.

In the circle, freshman Lauren Honkomp went the distance to garner her sixth straight winning decision. The rookie hurler struck out four while allowing two runs (one earned) in seven innings of work.

The Greyhounds started the scoring with a single run in the bottom of the first, when Tayler Weck plated Katie Kelly with an RBI double. Weck scored the second run on a fourth-inning double by Natalie Lalich.

KWC 5, UIndy 3
The Hounds ran into trouble early in the capper as the Panthers (6-4) hung two runs in each of the first two frames. Making her first career start, freshman pitcher Lindsey Bowers (0-1) gave up three singles and a walk in the first, getting chased after recording just two outs.

UIndy went to its third freshman pitcher of the day, Crystal Sicard, to get out of the inning, but she would later surrender a four-hit second inning that included two tallies.

Offensively, Dani Turner connected for a solo shot in the third – her fifth home run already this season.

Two more UIndy runs crossed in the bottom of the sixth. Kelly and Weck started the rally with singles, with Rachel Vander Wagon (double) and Lalich (sac fly) earning the RBIs.

UIndy wraps up its stay in Evansville with two more region games Saturday, both versus opponents from the GLIAC. The noon Eastern game brings a match-up with Ferris State, followed immediately by a meeting with Northwood. Live stats for the latter game will be available here.
