Mistakes cost Hounds in close 89-82 loss at Quincy

QUINCY, Ill. – UIndy men's basketball lost for just the second time since the beginning of the New Year, falling 89-82 in a Great Lakes Valley Conference interdivision matchup at Quincy Saturday in Pepsi Arena.

The Greyhounds (12-9, 9-4 GLVC) entered the weekend surrendering the fewest turnovers per game in the league, but coughed the ball up 20 times compared to only nine assists against the Hawks (20-4, 10-3).

"We were careless with the ball," Head Coach Stan Gouard said after the game. "We were trying to make the homerun play, and just couldn't handle (Quincy's) pressure."

Still, the Hounds and Hawks were locked in a close game from tip-off until the final horn. The contest featured 10 ties and 18 lead changes, and it wasn't until a 13-4 second-half run from the home side that any real separation was found on the scoreboard.

Quincy used that run to take its biggest lead of the game, 73-64, and, despite a notable effort, UIndy couldn't cut the deficit back to one possession the remainder of the way.

Remarkably, only five players scored for the Hawks, but Joseph Tagarelli and Evan McGaughey combined for 55 points, helping the Hawks finish 29 of 61 (47.5%) from the field as a team.

Junior Eric Davidson led the Hounds and finished with at least 20 points for the second time in as many games, scoring 22 while knocking down 3 of 5 from deep.

Sophomore point guard Jimmy King totaled 18 points, nine rebounds, six steals and four assists in 31 minutes.

Redshirt-junior Alex Etherington was the only other Hounds in double figures, recording 14 points.

UIndy finished just 6 of 19 (31.6%) as a team from long range, but did sink 20 of 22 (90.9%) at the free throw line. The Hounds also finished with one more rebound than the Hawks (34-33), but couldn't quiet Tagarelli and Co. down the stretch.

"We got out-worked," Gouard noted. "I felt like our body language was horrible throughout the game, and we didn't play through the tough times like we did (in Thursday's win)."

The Hounds return home for their next four games, meeting William Jewell next Thursday, Feb. 9, in Nicoson Hall for a 7:45 p.m. ET tip.
