SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – UIndy senior
Chalane Morrison set a personal and program record with eight goals Friday, helping the Greyhound women's lacrosse team defeat Shepherd University 20-8 on the road in a non-conference battle.
The win is UIndy's third in a row, and moves the Hounds (5-1) within one victory of matching last season's win total.
Morrison, a Delta, British Columbia, native, accomplished the record-breaking feat in the first half, topping the previous high (six goals) in roughly 26 minutes of game action. The eight tallies is tied for the third-highest in NCAA Division II this season.
"We've been waiting for her to play like we know she can, and she came out and did that today," Head Coach
Jillian Howley said. "It's great seeing her compete at the level she did today, and we'll need that when we meet Pace on Tuesday."
Junior
Anna Rulapaugh added five goals and a pair of assists, increasing her conference-leading point total up to 38 for the season
The visitors wasted little time getting the offense going, as the Rulapaugh and Morrison each scored before the Rams (0-4) even held a possession.
Sophomore
Hana Priddy scored her first goal of the game soon after, but the Rams bounced back with a pair of goals to make it 3-3 just seven minutes into the game.
That's when Morrison and Co. took over.
The Hounds reeled off a 10-2 scoring stretch before the half ended to take an insurmountable lead. Morrison scored seven of the 10, as Rulapaugh (two) and sophomore
Hana Priddy added the others.
Morrison's sixth goal – which tied UIndy's mark and matched her collegiate-best – put UIndy up 11-4, and she would soon net her seventh and eight goals before the first half horn sounded.
UIndy went into the break leading the Rams 13-5, having converted 23 shots while collecting more than twice as many ground balls (13 to 6).
Just as they had in the first, the Hounds scored quickly to start the second period, as freshman
Grace Gunneson tallied her first goal of the day just 30 seconds in.
UIndy ultimately outscored Shepherd 7-3 in the second half, getting goals from Rulapaugh, Gunneson, freshman
Kailee King and sophomore
Laura McKee, marching to a 20-8 final over the defending Mountain East Conference champions.
Eight Hounds contributed at least one point in Friday's win, and as a team UIndy finished with 21 ground balls to Shepherd's 11. UIndy was also successful on all 17 of its clear attempts.
Defensively, redshirt-freshman
Lauren Wagner paced the Hounds with three caused turnovers. Freshman midfielder
Micayla Gammon led the team with four ground balls, as McClure and McKee finished with three apiece.
Howley commended the overall success of her team's win, but noted the areas where the Hounds can still grow, saying, "We need to work on consistency … we are just a little too much of a roller coaster. When we play well it looks really good, but we need to be better at putting teams away early."
UIndy continues its road trip with a neutral-site contest against Pace University next Tuesday, March 14, at the brand new US Lacrosse Headquarters in Sparks, Md. The Setters (0-1) entered this week ranked 19th in the latest Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) Division II Coaches Poll, and will face Grand Valley State prior to Tuesday's 3 p.m. meeting with the Greyhounds.
