INDIANAPOLIS – UIndy women's lacrosse pieced together a superb second half to sprint past visiting Wheeling Jesuit Sunday, winning 18-8 at Key Stadium.
On the strength of a 10-3 scoring run to close the game, the Greyhounds improved to 6-1 overall – matching last season's win total in 11 fewer games. The visiting Cardinals fell to 2-5 with the loss.
Despite the first goal of the game coming from the Cardinals, it looked like the Hounds would run away early after potting six in a row, making it 6-1 by the eight-minute mark.
Anna Rulapaugh,
Hana Priddy, Grace Guneson and
Kylie Backus each netted early goals, as
Chalane Morrison and
Erika Mackenzie provided assists.
But Wheeling Jesuit responded, scoring four in a row before the halftime horn to cut the deficit to 6-4 by intermission.
After trading early second-half goals, UIndy exploded for five straight to take a commanding 11-5 advantage.
Morrison, who set the program record with eight goals in the Hounds' last game, found the back twice during the stretch, with Mackenzie, Priddy and
Riley McClure each adding markers.
Wheeling added a score to stop the bleeding, but soon enough UIndy used a quick 4-0 run to make it 16-6 and cue the running clock.
Morrison and Gunneson each finished with four goals, and Morrison led the way in points by adding a pair of assists.
Priddy's four goals matched her season-high, and Rulapaugh finished with multiple goals for the sixth time this season.
Mackenzie's score was her first of the campaign, while Backus and McClure notched their second each.
Kelly Pinkerton's late score was her third this season.
As a team, UIndy put 31 shots on goal to Wheeling Jesuit's 19, and dominated possession for much of the game by winning 19 of 27 total draw controls.
McClure was all over the field for the Hounds, setting collegiate-highs with seven draw controls and three caused turnovers. She also added two ground balls as the Hounds finished with 17 total.
Lauren Granville and
Clare Difato split time in the cage for UIndy, each allowing four goals in a half of action.
UIndy hits the road next week to face the nation's second-ranked team in Lindenwood, starting at 6 p.m. in St. Charles, Mo.
