Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse | | Kyle Piercy, Sports Information Director

Women's lacrosse comes up just shy at second-ranked Lindenwood

ST. CHARLES, Mo. – UIndy women's lacrosse took No. 2 Lindenwood to the wire Sunday evening, but ultimately fell 9-5 on the road at Harlen C. Hunter Stadium.

The three-time national semifinalist Lions (11-0) scored four late goals to break away from the second-year Greyhounds (6-2), who fell 15-0 to Lindenwood last season. Despite the loss, UIndy held Lindenwood to a season low goal total, as sophomore goalie Lauren Granville recorded eight saves.

With the game tied at 5-5, the Lions took the lead for good on a score from Sarah Goetz near the 12-minute mark in the second half, and tacked on three late insurance goals to seal the win.

Until that point, however, the Hounds were neck-and-neck with their second-ranked hosts, and threatened to be the first squad to hand the Lions a loss this season.

The Greyhounds got out to a 3-0 start through the first 12-plus minutes, as senior Chalane Morrison opened the scoring with her 17th goal of the season roughly eight minutes in.

Junior Anna Rulapaugh followed with consecutive goals just 90 seconds apart, the first of which came off an assist from Morrison.

Lindenwood was held scoreless for more than 14 minutes, but eventually found the back of the net to make it 3-1. The Lions then scored again just past the midway point of the period to cut the deficit to 3-2.

Morrison answered with her second score of the day, but before the halftime horn sounded Lindenwood had drawn even at 4-4. It marked only the third time this season that the Lions weren't leading after 30 minutes of action.

The Lions scored their third unanswered goal eight minutes into the second half, but Morrison quickly responded 60 seconds later with her hat trick goal to bring it back to 5-5.

That tally would be the Hounds' last, however, as the Lions kept them off the board for the final 20 minutes while scoring four goals of their own.

UIndy finished with 20 shots to Lindenwood's 24, and also recorded fewer ground balls (17 to 23) while committing more turnovers (27 to 21). Draw controls were split at an even 8-8 between the two sides.

Rulapaugh ran her team-high goal and point totals to 25 and 44, respectively, for the season, while Morrison's three scores pushed her up to 22.

Freshman Riley McClure led UIndy with six ground balls and three caused turnovers, while also corralling a draw control. Morrison and sophomore Hana Priddy each finished with three draw controls.

UIndy opens Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play Saturday, hosting No. 16 Grand Valley State at 1 p.m. ET in Key Stadium.
