INDIANAPOLIS – Seven unanswered goals from Grand Valley State lifted the visitors to a 15-11 victory over UIndy women's lacrosse Saturday afternoon in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) opener inside Key Stadium.
After coming from behind to grab an 11-8 lead midway through the second half, the Greyhounds (6-3, 0-1 GLIAC) couldn't stop the Lakers (2-6, 1-0) from dominating possession and reeling off seven straight.
The Lakers, who were ranked as high as eighth and were receiving votes in the latest IWLCA Division II poll, won seven of the last nine draw controls Saturday. Five of GVSU's late goals came within a stretch lasting less than four minutes.
UIndy had to overcome an early deficit to get back into the game, and seemed poised to knock off the Lakers.
GVSU scored the opening two goals of the game within 90 seconds, and added two more minutes later to take a 4-1 lead.
The Hounds rallied, though, and
Chalane Morrison notched a hat trick throughout the first half to bring the home side within one, 5-4.
Freshman
Kailee King also added a first-half tally, making it 7-5 Lakers at the intermission.
UIndy excelled out of the halftime break, running off a remarkable 6-1 run to take its 11-7 lead.
Junior
Anna Rulapaugh scored the first two Greyhounds goals of the period – her second and third of the game – and King added another to bring UIndy within 8-7.
Sophomore
Hana Priddy finally evened the game at 8 apiece with a man-up goal off an assist from Rulapaugh.
From there, Morrison scored twice more, and freshman
Grace Gunneson added her first goal, helping UIndy take its biggest lead of the day, 11-8.
That's the Grand Valley clamped down, controlling possession while converting on seven of its last 11 shot attempts.
Morrison led UIndy with five goals and an assist, and Rulapaugh totaled five points with two goals and three helpers.
Freshmen
Micayla Gammon and
Kelly Pinkerton each finished with two ground balls, but the Hounds finished with 13 total ground balls to the Lakers' 16.
UIndy resumes GLIAC play next Friday, traveling to face Lake Erie in Painesville, Ohio, for a 7 p.m. ET start.
