Morrison's late goal caps thrilling 10-9 win at Lake Erie

PAINESVILLE, Ohio – Senior Chalane Morrison scored with 11 seconds on the clock to cap a resilient second-half effort from UIndy women's lacrosse, leading to a 10-9 victory in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contest at Lake Erie.

Playing against Head Coach Jillian Howley's former team, the Greyhounds (7-3, 1-1 GLIAC) won their first conference game of the year and surpassed last season's win total. Howley improved to 2-1 against the Storm, including a 2-0 mark at Jack Britt Stadium.

The win also snapped Lake Erie's program-best seven-game winning streak to start the season, dropping the hosts to 7-1 overall and 0-1 in-conference.

For the first 30 minutes, however, the Storm seemed poised to knock off the visiting Greyhounds.

UIndy's leading scorer, Morrison, netted the game's first goal, but Lake Erie added two free position scores within a span of 20 seconds just minutes later to grab a 2-1 edge.

The Storm took advantage of another free position near the midway point of the first half, as Taylor Mathis scored to make it 3-1.

After nearly 15 scoreless minutes, Lake Erie added two more to push its lead up to 5-1.

Before the halftime horn sounded, UIndy junior Anna Rulapaugh scored to narrow the gap to 5-2. But keeper Harmony Moore and the rest of the Lake Erie defense turned in a solid opening 30 minutes. Moore turned aside nine of UIndy's 11 shots on goal.

The final 30 minutes was a different story.

Shortly after the intermission, sophomore Hannah Burczyk helped cut the deficit with a man-up goal less than 90 seconds into the half. She would add her second goal minutes later to make it 5-4, beginning a see-saw half that went down to the wire.

Lake Erie scored two in a row to push the lead back to 7-4, but that's when the Hounds rallied.

UIndy scored four unanswered, taking its first lead of the game on Rulapaugh's hat trick goal near the 12-minute mark, making it 8-7. Burczyk and freshman Grace Gunneson also added scores during the stretch.

The Storm's Anna Spin netted a goal three minutes later, but less than 30 seconds passed before it was answered by Gunneson's second score of the half.

Mathis scored her fifth goal near the two-minute mark, again bringing the game level at 9-9.

After the score, UIndy sophomore Laura McKee grabbed the draw control, eventually leading to a timeout being called by Howley.

With less than 40 seconds on the clock, the Hounds went to work. A foul called against Lake Erie led to a free position for Morrison, and, with just :11 showing on the clock, she converted the game-winning goal.

"We couldn't hit the back of the net in the first half," Howley said. "We were getting opportunities and getting our shots. In the second half we finally were able to start burying those shots."

Burczyk led the Hounds with four total points (three goals, one assist), and Rulapaugh followed with her fifth hat trick of the season.

UIndy dominated the draw controls, winning 16 of 21, as freshman Riley McClure secured five and McKee, Gunneson and sophomore Hana Priddy each had three.

"We were great on draws, which was huge," Howley said. "Another major part of the win was getting contributions from a lot of different players. Gunneson and Burczyk were crucial to our win."

Howley could see her squad's growth after a couple of narrow defeats against stiff competition.

"I'm really proud we were able to learn from our losses (to Lindenwood and Grand Valley State). Those were tough games, but without those learning moments I'm not sure we would have been able to win tonight."

The Greyhounds continue GLIAC play Sunday, traveling to North Canton, Ohio, to meeting Walsh for a noon start.
