PAINESVILLE, Ohio – Three unanswered goals in the final period lifted the UIndy men's lacrosse team past Lake Erie College Saturday, 10-7, in an evenly-contested showdown at Jack Britt Stadium.
The Greyhounds (4-3) got two fourth-quarter scores from sophomore
Parker Kump and another from
Matthew Johnson as time wound down, securing their second road victory of the season against the Storm (2-4), who received votes in last week's USILA/Nike Division II Coaches Poll.
Before the final period, however, the Hounds and Storm were locked in a dead heat.
UIndy netted two goals in quick succession early in the first – from freshman
Parker Johnson and sophomore
Luke Allen – but Lake Erie responded with one of its own midway through the quarter.
Junior
Sam Horning followed with a score off a feed from
Parker Johnson, but before the first quarter ended the Storm has scored twice more to even the game at 3-3.
The Hounds outscored the Storm 3-1 in the second period to open up a slight margin by halftime, with Horning, Kump and
Matthew Johnson each recording unassisted goals.
Lake Erie rallied yet again, however, putting up an identical 3-1 mark on UIndy in the third quarter to tie the game at 7-7.
Shawn Kimble scored the Hounds' lone goal in the period.
Nearly five minutes passed before Kump potted the game-winning goal, giving UIndy an 8-7 lead it would not relinquish. He completed the hat trick off a feed from
Shawn Kimble minutes later, and
Matthew Johnson iced the game with his second goal of the day as the final horn neared, making it 10-7.
The hat trick is Kump's third of the season and second in as many games, and came on just six shots. Horning and
Matthew Johnson also finished with three points, as each added an assist to their two goals.
Shawn Kimble led the Hounds with two assists, running his team-high season total to eight.
His brother,
Jarod Kimble, put together another solid game as the Hounds' net minder, racking up 10 saves and seven ground balls.
Specialist
Dominic Guarino also recorded seven ground balls, and won 13 of 20 faceoffs for UIndy.
The team stats were nearly identical, as each team finished with 12 turnovers and UIndy barely led in shots on goal (18 to 17), ground balls (27 to 23) and saves (10 to 8). The Hounds were also a perfect 18-for-18 on their clear attempts.
UIndy is on the road again next Saturday, traveling to take on fourth-ranked Lindenwood in St. Charles, Mo. The scheduled start time is set for 1 p.m. ET.
