INDIANAPOLIS –
Rekindling one of the best rivalries in Division II softball, the UIndy softball team (32-18, 13-13 GLVC) split a twin bill with Missouri St. Louis at Baumgartner Field Monday. After the Tritons (35-13, 17-7), the Midwest Region's second-ranked team
, held on for a 4-1 win in game one, senior
Dani Turner delivered her first walk-off bomb of the season – a two-run home run that capped a 7-6 UIndy win. The victory wrapped up a 10-game homestand for the Hounds, who will hit the road next weekend for the final four games of the regular season.
UMSL 4, UIndy 1
In a match-up that featured the winners of each of the last five Great Lakes Valley Conference championships, UIndy jumped out to an early lead with a run in the first.
Jessie Noone's one-out single set the table for
Taylor Podschweit, who smoked one down the left field line for an RBI double. The Aurora, Ill., native went on the reach base safely in all four of her plate appearances in the game, coaxing three consecutive walks while adding a stolen base.
The Hounds would not cross the plate again, with UMSL starter Carly Kingery (19-6) keeping the home team off the board for the final six innings. The Tritons scored three runs in the fourth to take the lead, with one coming on a solo home run from catcher Serena Olson.
UIndy freshman pitcher
Lauren Honkomp (21-9) took the loss, giving up two runs (one earned) on nine hits while fanning seven.
Freshman outfielder
Lora Barton finished 2 for 3 at the plate with a pair of singles, while veterans
Katie Kelly and
Natalie Lalich each chipped in a base hit.
UIndy 7, UMSL 6
The Greyhound bats came alive in game two, scoring more runs in the capper than their previous seven games combined. The Tritons would not go quietly, however, as they would fall behind by scores of 3-0, 4-3 and 5-4, but rebound to tie it up each time.
With the score knotted at five apiece heading into the seventh, UMSL took its first lead of the game with an RBI double by Olson. The Hounds come not concede, however, as a one-out walk from Podschweit brought the winning run to the plate in the form of Turner. The Evansville, Ind., product, patient as always, took the first three pitches before depositing a 2-1 offering over the left field fence to give the Hounds the victory. It also made a winner of Honkomp (22-9), who came on in relief of
Crystal Sicard in the fourth.
Podschweit homered earlier in the game with a solo shot in the third – her sixth blast of the year. Kelly and
Julia Liceaga each had two singles, while Lalich added a double.
The Greyhound will head west this weekend to wrap up the regular season. They'll face Quincy University Saturday, April 29 and Truman State University Sunday, April 30.
