Top-ranked Saints survive scare from upset-minded Greyhounds

GAFFNEY, S.C. – For the umpteenth time this season the UIndy men's lacrosse team found itself knocking on the door of an upset victory, but the nation's top-ranked Limestone Saints survived the scare and held on for a 14-12 win at home.

The host Saints (18-1), the third opponent this season to celebrate its Senior Day against UIndy, entered as the No. 1 team in Division II and the defending national runners-up, losing only four games over the last four years.

Still, the Greyhounds (7-6) put together a strong effort even without All-American keeper Jarod Kimble, who was sidelined with an injury.

Limestone was the fourth nationally-ranked team the second-year Greyhounds have faced this season, and the third to win by only two goals. UIndy won the other, a 9-4 upset over then-No. 5 Lindenwood April 1.

The Saints netted the game's first goal just 45 seconds in, but UIndy sophomore Tyler Johnston shortly answered for the Greyhounds with his first score.

Leading scorer, sophomore Parker Kump, netted two quick scores to give UIndy its first lead of the afternoon. Junior Sam Horning then made it 4-2 after a tough score from the left side of the cage.

The two sides traded a pair of goals, with the Hounds getting two one-on-one goals from sophomore Matthew Johnson and Kump, making it 6-4. Those six UIndy goals came on only 11 shots.

The home side took advantage of a pair of late UIndy penalties, regaining the lead for the first time since it was 2-1. The Saints scored three goals in the final 1:51 – including two man-up scores – the last of which came quite literally as the clock expired.

Limestone ran its goal streak to five in a row early in the third quarter, but the Hounds wouldn't let the Saints pull away.

Horning slung home his second goal from distance near the five-minute mark, and roughly 30 seconds later Matthew Johnson found Johnston for a back-door score, making it 9-8.

The Saints would add a goal before the quarter ended, leading 10-8 with 15 minutes remaining.

Matthew Johnson again found Johnston to open the scoring in the fourth, and moments later sophomore Kevin Spurlock came up with a crucial man-up score for the Hounds, tying things at 10-all.

Before long Johnston once again found prime position within the Limestone defense, taking a feed from Kump to score and remarkably put UIndy ahead, 11-10.

In a game of runs, Limestone had the final say with a four-goal sprint down the stretch. Two face-off wins led to two goals in 30 seconds, making it 12-11, and the Saints added two more to all but put the game away.

Johnston made things interesting with his fifth goal – the third off a Matthew Johnson feed – pulling the Hounds within 14-12 with 1:24 left on the clock. But the clock eventually ran out on any comeback bid.

Limestone entered as the Division II leaders in a host of statistical categories, and came out on top Saturday in face-offs (20 of 28), ground balls (37 to 33) and shots (39 to 28).

UIndy was able to cause 12 of Limestone's 16 turnovers, however, led by Max Groves' and Jake Wittmeyer's three apiece. The two defenders also paced UIndy with four ground balls each.

Sophomore Connor Konas performed admirably, especially with his first collegiate start coming against the nation's best offense. The Brighton, Mich., native had nine saves for the Hounds.

Johnston's five goals tied a career-high, and he did all of his damage on just six shots. Matthew Johnson also had a personal best with four assists, finishing with five points.

Kump's hat trick was his sixth this season and third in a row, and he'll end 2017 as the team's leading scorer once again with 35, one more than he had in the inaugural 2016 campaign.

UIndy finishes its second-ever season with a winning record, following 2016's 8-6 mark with a 7-6 record.
