INDIANAPOLIS – Freshman
Toriano Clinton went for 362 all-purpose yards and five touchdowns to lead the Greyhounds (6-1, 5-0 Great Lakes Lakes) to their sixth consecutive win, downing the visiting Bearcats (4-4, 2-2), 48-10, Saturday night at Key Stadium. Clinton scored three rushing TDs and racked up 182 yards on the ground while becoming the UIndy first student-athlete since at least 1983* with two kickoff return touchdowns in a single game.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Facing some windy, very fall-like conditions, the Hounds committed to the run game early, handing off to its trio of talented running backs in Clinton,
Al McKeller and
Tyre Lee. When the dust settled, the Hounds combined for a gaudy 446 rushing yards, most in the nine-year tenure of Head Coach Bob Bartolomeo.
Clinton also came within three yards of breaking the modern school record* for all-purpose yards in a game, as his 362 yards came just shy of the 364 amassed by Craig Cothron versus Northwood in 1998.
Meanwhile, senior
Malik Higgins joined an elite club by becoming just the third Greyhound to surpass 3,000 yards receiving for his career.
The Bearcats came into the night with the GLVC's top-ranked offense, but the Hounds limited them to just 206 total yards – nearly 270 yards under their season average. Linebackers
Joe Lambright and
Alex Parsons and d-lineman
Jacob Schmatz were each credited with seven tackles, while the latter batted down two of the Bearcats' 12 passes.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- McKeller put up some impressive rushing numbers of his own, going for 137 yards and a pair of TDs. It marked the first time this season that two Greyhounds hit the 100-yard-rushing mark in the same game.
- Clinton did his rushing damage on just 11 carries, averaging an amazing 16.5 yards per attempt. His final rushing TD was 71 yards in the making, good for UIndy's longest rush of the season.
- Though he handed it off most of the night, quarterback
Jake Purichia was a perfect 5-for-5 passing for 53 yards. He also rushed for 31 yards on his lone carry, completely hurdling a McKendree defender in the process.
- Redshirt-freshman kicker
Paul Buisman launched a career-best 63-yard punt in the third quarter, pinning the Bearcats at their own four-yard line.
- With McKendree working on its best drive of the game early in the third quarter, senior cornerback
Robert Williams came down with his second interception of the night to end the threat. He now has six career picks to his credit.
MORE NOTES
UIndy has not lost in seven all-time meetings with McKendree … The Hounds are now 5-0 in GLVC play and sit in a virtual tie with Truman, who defeated Southwest Baptist, 38-14, earlier today to move to 4-0.
UP NEXT
UIndy returns to the road for a two-week stretch, starting with a trip to Bolivar, Mo., to battle the aforementioned Southwest Baptist Bearcats Saturday, Oct. 27 at 2 p.m. ET.
