INDIANAPOLIS – The UIndy women's basketball team went up against the Tiffin Dragons for the fourth-consecutive season Sunday afternoon. The Hounds have defeated the Dragons each of the last three times the teams have met, and Sunday was no different with UIndy lighting up the Dragons with a score of 90-78.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
Both teams shot out of the gates quickly. With just under four minutes left in the period, the game was knotted at 18 each,
Taylor Dillard scored four straight points for the Hounds to help them start pulling away.
Katie Sowa came off the bench in relief of
Emma Benoit, sinking a pair of three's along with
Laura Thomas to give UIndy a 33-20 lead at the end of the first. Thomas led the way for the Hounds, accounting for 13 of the team's points while the team as a whole shot over 63% from the field, draining all six of their three point attempts.
Â
The Hounds kept their foot on the gas in the second period, hitting their shots from deep and getting to the line. UIndy pushed their lead to as much as 17 points after
Emma Benoit hit a layup with just over two minutes to go in the half. The Dragons got a tip-in layup as time expired in the half to trim the Greyhound lead to 14 heading into the break. UIndy kept up their hot shooting from the field, shooting over 66% from the field in the quarter while putting 53 total points in the half.
Â
The Hounds were not going to be conservative in the second half, still sending the ball down low for layups and when they were not getting layups, they were getting to the line. UIndy led by as much as 20 in the period. The Dragons started to gain some momentum at the end of the third, still trailing the Greyhounds by 17 heading into the final period of play. The Dragons shot 50% in the quarter, including four made three-pointers. UIndy only had one made three in the quarter, but still shot over 61% from the field.
Â
Tiffin kept chipping away at the UIndy lead, cutting it down to 12 before
Kristin Wodrich took her first timeout of the half. The Dragons eventually cut the lead down to just 10 with just over five minutes to go before a Benoit layup put the Hounds back up 12. Tiffin would start fouling UIndy down the stretch, the Hounds would start to pull away before missing some free throws late, but held on to the 12-point win to move to 4-2 on the season.
