INDIANAPOLIS - The #24 University of Indianapolis Greyhounds' women's lacrosse team came up short in their season opener on Saturday, 11-7 to the #3 Lindenwood Lions.
The Hounds jumped out to a 4-2 lead in the first seven minutes off of goals from
Grace Gunneson,
Gina Jablonski,
Delaney Davidson and
Anna Rulapaugh, and built a 6-3 lead, their largest of the game, after Davidson's second goal and a tally by
Erika Mayette.
The Lions rallied, however, scoring two in the final two minutes of the first to cut the lead to one at the half and tying the game early in the second.
Lauryn Hardoy put the Hounds ahead once more with a goal 24 seconds after the equalizer, but the Lions ripped off five unanswered goals in the last 18:05 to take an 11-7 win.
The Lions went a perfect 18-for-18 on clear attempts and were stout defensively, causing 12 turnovers and winning 20 ground balls to the Hounds' 12. The Lions put 23 of their 30 shots on goal while the Hounds put 14 of their 26 attempts on frame.
Lauren Granville made 12 saves for the Hounds, stopping 54.5% of the Lions' shots on goal.
Kelly Pinkerton led the Hounds with four ground balls. Gunneson led the Hounds offensively, putting five of her six shots on target while Davidson put two of her five on frame. None of the Hounds' goals were assisted.
The Hounds will host the Rockhurst Hawks on Saturday at 11 a.m. at Key Stadium.
