Greyhounds power past #13 Quincy to conclude two-game set

WESTFIELD, Ind. - The UIndy baseball team (4-2) won its second straight game over 13th-ranked Quincy on Monday afternoon at Grand Park, 8-4, finishing the weekend set with a pair of wins to match the opening series against Kentucky Wesleyan.

The Greyhounds used five pitchers in the win, as the hurlers struck out 14 opposing batters to earn the victory over the Hawks. But unlike the first few games of this season, the pitching was the story; it was the offense on Monday that proved to be the difference maker. Dylan Jones smacked a long home run in his first at-bat of the day, and five innings later Kyle Orloff put the game out of reach with a smash that drove in four runs.

Brian Wichman toed the rubber for the Hounds and tossed three innings of one-hit ball, while punching out six Hawks. The southpaw allowed just one run before exiting with a 4-1 advantage. After Jones hit a two-run shot in the first, the Hounds added a single tally each of the next two innings on singles by Storm Joop and Joe Kenney.

Christian Beard entered his first game of the season and nearly went three innings of clean work before the sophomore allowed a pair of runs to force his exit. Michael Schalasky finished the sixth inning and pitched through the eighth to provide the relief spark the Hounds needed as the Hawks threatened. Now up 4-3, UIndy loaded the bases for Orloff, who promptly stamped the ball over the left-field fence to essentially put the game out of reach.

Reid Werner got the ball in the ninth and allowed one run, but struck out the final hitter to end the game.

His grand slam gives Orloff a team-best seven RBI on the young season, and is now one of five Greyhounds to smash a dinger so far in 2018. Since sacrificing himself three times against Notre Dame on Friday, Jones has scored three times and has a pair of extra-base knocks to bump his slugging percentage up to .500.

Schalasky has now thrown 13 innings this year, all in relief, and allowed just one earned run to post a 0.69 ERA in four appearances. Beard has struck out five hitters in 4.1 innings has yet to surrender an earned run.

The Greyhounds are set to play a three-game series next weekend against Oakland City. It's currently scheduled to be in Oakland City, but could be moved to Greyhound Park due to weather. Stay tuned for updates.
