INDIANAPOLIS - The No. 9 UIndy women's lacrosse team (6-1, 2-0 GLIAC) scored the first seven goals of the day against the visiting Davenport Panthers, running by the GLIAC foe by a final of 18-5 on Sunday afternoon at Key Stadium.
Grace Gunneson scored a team-high four goals, while
Anna RulapaughÂ
Lauryn Hardoy each tallied a pair of scores and assists.
Lauren Granville made three saves in the cage for the Hounds.Â
It was a slow start offensively for the Greyhounds after
Delaney Davidson began the scoring just 78 seconds into the game. However, the UIndy defense forced six turnovers in a six-minute span to limit the Panther attack to a minimum. The defensive prowess created offensive opportunities, of which the Hounds took full advantage.
Anna Rulapaugh found the back of the cage twice, while Davidson tallied another one in a span of two-and-a-half minutes around the 18-minute mark. Gunneson and Hardoy added to the Greyhound lead midway through the first half, making it 7-0 in favor of the Crimson and Grey.Â
After Davenport scored its first goal of the day, UIndy rattled off three of its own in the final four minutes. Gunneson scored her third of the half, while
Abby Wilmot recorded her first two scores in GLIAC action. The Panthers added a goal of their own right before the half to make it 10-2.Â
It was much of the same for the Hounds in the second half, who received goals from
Hannah Burczyk and
Abigail Lagos in the first five minutes to have the clock run without stoppage the rest of the way.
Riley McClure notched her second goal of the season late in the contest, and Gunneson netted her fourth of the game to finish the scoring.Â
The Greyhounds had seven players score at least two goals, including
Abigail Lagos, who has now scored in each of the past six games. Gunneson's four gives the sophomore 17 on the season, nine of which have come the past two contests.
Peyton Romig secured another eight draw controls in the win, who has already set a new program record for the season in the category. McClure was a force defensively on the afternoon, scooping up seven ground balls, causing five turnovers, and winnig five draw controls herself. The UIndy defense did not allow a single free position attempt during the game, the first time this season the Greyhounds have limited their opponents in the category.Â
The ninth-ranked Hounds will hit the road for three straight conference games, starting in Allendale, Mich. against No. 18 Grand Valley State this Thursday. The contest is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. ET from the GVSU Lacrosse Stadium.
