Vasil homers, pitching impresses in sweep of Lake Erie

INDIANAPOLIS - In what lasted a total of only three hours and 15 minutes, the UIndy baseball team (21-14) made quick work of visiting Lake Erie (12-17-1) at Greyhound Park on Thursday in the doubleheader sweep. The pitching staff combined to allow just one run over 14 innings of work, headlined by John Hendry, who threw a complete-game shutout in game two. Brian Wichman earned the win in game one with 4.2 innings of two-hit ball, while Cole Humphrey struck out one in a perfect 2.1 innings of relief for his first-career save.

The Greyhound offense was efficient with their offense, scoring six runs on just seven hits in both games. Storm Joop recorded three knocks, while Devon Hensley, Dylan Jones, Trey Smith, and Adam Vasil each had one apiece. Vasil's fourth-inning dinger is the second of the season for the transfer, and first since March 17.

Joop gave the Hounds the early lead in game one, doubling to lead off the game before advancing to third base on a fly out and scoring on a wild pitch with Macy Holdsworth at the plate. Smith drew a one-out walk and walked into third on consecutive wild pitches thrown by the Lake Erie hurler. Two batters later, Hensley singled the freshman home with a perfectly-placed bunt that resulted in a knock.

Wichman allowed a run in the top of the third, but the Greyhounds got the run back in their half of the fourth. Smith singled with two outs and proceeded to steal second base before moving to third on another wild pitch. Joe Kenney put the ball in play on the next pitch, which was enough to rattle the Storm defense, causing Smith to cross home plate.

Humphrey relieved Wichman with two gone in the fifth inning and induced the first of four ground outs in his outing. The redshirt freshman has not allowed a run or a hit in his 4.2 innings this season.

UIndy 3, Lake Erie 0
Hendry gave the Greyhounds a much-needed complete game, as the team wrapped up its sixth game in five days on Thursday. The sophomore scattered six hits, while walking none, in his seven innings.

Once again, UIndy began the scoring in game two, when Joop came around to score on grounder by Hunter Wanting after leading off with another double. Vasil led off the fourth with a opposite-field homer to make the score 2-0.

Vasil scored again in the sixth after leading off the frame with a walk. After advancing to second on a sacrifice bunt by Kenney, he crossed the plate on a wild pitch. Hendry allowed a two-out single in the top of the seventh before punching out the final Storm hitter to end the game.

The Greyhounds host McKendree this weekend for a four-game set as the team gets back to conference action. First pitch from Greyhound Park is scheduled for 12 p.m. on Saturday. Head coach Gary Vaught is just two wins away from 800 in his time in the Circle City.
