SURPRISE, Ariz. – On what proved to be an extremely windy day at the Surprise Tennis and Racquet Center for the national semifinals, the No. 12 UIndy men's tennis team dropped a 5-3 decision to No. 1 Barry to bow out of the NCAA tournament. This season marked the first two NCAA Championships wins in program history.
Â
The Greyhounds jumped out to a huge 3-0 advantage after sweeping doubles from the Buccaneers.
Magnus Mueller and
Christoph Drechsler worked quickly at No. 2 to begin the afternoon for UIndy, while
Nils Hoffacker and
Dario Huber followed with an 8-4 win at No. 3.
Â
No. 22 duo
Renato Lima and
Andrea Morlet stayed hot, edging out the Barry top doubles squad, 8-6.
Â
Things took a turn in singles play, as each Hound dropped the first set except Hoffacker. The 3-0 Greyhound lead was erased as the Bucs took Nos. 2, 3, and 5 to knot the contest up at three apiece. Each member from Barry in those slots are ranked nationally as singles players.
Â
After Barry's eighth-ranked Pierre Montrieul forced a third frame against Hoffacker,
Matej Kostadinov staged a comeback at No. 6 to squander any hope for a sweep by the top-ranked team in the nation. At No. 4, Mueller fell in straight sets, giving Barry a 4-3 advantage with just two singles matches to finish.
Â
Hoffacker led 2-1 in the third, but succumbed to the Bucs' top player in a thriller. Kostadinov's match at No. 6 remains unfinished.
Â
The Greyhounds finish the spring with a 26-3 record.
