INDIANAPOLIS- The #18 Greyhound wrestling team completed its trip to the 2019 NWCA National Duals with a 1-2 record, falling to #1 Nebraska-Kearney, defeating #14 Fort Hays State and bowing out of the event with a loss to #7 Wheeling Jesuit.
#3
Dylan Faulkenberg (12-2) was the lone Greyhound to post a 3-0 day, while
Shelden Struble (11-4) and
Brian Wagner (6-5) each went 2-1 over the three duals.
#1 NEBRASKA KEARNEY 35 - #18 UINDY 6
After the top-ranked Lopers took wins in the first six matches of the dual,
Zach Fry (5-7), making his season debut at 174, took an upset win 5-3 over #5 Zach Stodden. Faulkenberg would notch the final three UIndy points against UNK, with a 7-1 decision over #5 Jarrod Hinrichs at heavyweight. The victory avenged a loss the Greyhound redshirt senior took at last year's national tournament.
#18 UINDY 21 - #14 FORT HAYS STATE 13
In its second dual of the day, UIndy put a tally in the win column versus #14 Fort Hays.
D.J. Smith (6-9) put the Greyhounds up early with a 7-5 win over Broderick Green, with
Ana Abduljelil (6-7) following suite with an 11-4 win at 133 over Riley Tubbs. After the Tigers got on the board at 141,
Kyle Barkovich (8-2) pushed the UIndy lead to 9-3 with a 3-1 win in SV-1 over Jonathon Ball.
Fort Hays took the 157 match, but Struble added a quick six points for the Hounds with a pin of Aryus Jones in 1:45 at 165. After FHSU wins at 174 and 184, Wagner took a 6-4 win at 197 over Jordan Davis and Faulkenberg won 5-3 versus AJ Cooper to close out the Greyhound victory.
#7 WHEELING JESUIT 22 - #18 UINDY 20
The Cardinals took a 13-0 lead early against the Greyhounds, in the teams' second meeting in dual action this season. Back-to-back pins from
Heath Lange (1-2) and Struble, however, put UIndy back in the match. Lange 's fall came at the 3:20 mark against Dylan Taylor, while Struble stuck #10 Keegan Driscoll in 1:43.
After wins for WJU at both 174 and 184, Wagner and Faulkenberg again closed out the dual with wins, but it was not enough to overcome the Cardinals. Wagner took a 6-1 win over Dalton Hoover, while Faulkenberg put up a 16-0 first-period tech fall over Devan Uzelak to push the final score to 22-20.
The Greyhounds face another tough dual test next weekend, as they will head to UW-Parkside to wrestle #2 St. Cloud State at the Ranger Duals. UIndy wrestles the Huskies in an 11:30 a.m. dual from Kenosha, Wisc.
