Late Surge Falls Short in Top-15 Clash

INDIANAPOLIS – The No. 13 UIndy men's basketball team (7-1, 0-1 GLVC) dropped its first game of the season Tuesday night, falling to third-ranked Bellarmine, 71-69, at Nicoson Hall. The Greyhounds erased a 12-point deficit in the waning minutes but the Knights (6-0, 1-0) managed the game's final bucket with just 5.8 seconds remaining to edge the Hounds in the conference opener.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Down 69-57 with 3:34 left, UIndy came storming back with a 12-0 run to tie it up in the closing minute. A 3-pointer from Trevor Lakes sparked the rally and senior point guard Jimmy King took it from there. The hometown product scored the Hounds' final seven points, including a pull-up triple with 32.3 ticks remaining to knot it at 69-all.

The Knights would respond, however, breaking a four-minute field goal drought with a timely deuce from Dylan Penn. The sophomore guard drove to his left, spun in the lane and dropped in the last of his 14 points with a shade under six seconds to go.

The Hounds would get one more chance, but King's fade-away three as the buzzer sounded fell short, sealing the win for BU.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- King finished with a game-high 22 points on 8-of-12 shooting while adding five assists and four rebounds.
- Lakes (14 pts), Marcus Latham (14 pts) and Cory Miller Jr. (12 pts) joined King in double figures.
- Jordache Mavunga led all players with 11 boards.
- The Hounds committed a season-high 16 turnovers while forcing 12 from the Knights.

HOUDS BYTES
Head Coach Stan Gouard…
"Tonight was a hard-fought basketball game by both teams. Bellarmine does such great job with their execution, and we didn't execute very well, especially on the offensive end. We guarded for long possessions but broke down late, so we have to get in better shape. I feel like our conditioning is not where it should be on the defensive end, and that's where it has to improve."

UP NEXT
UIndy returns the non-conference play for their final game of the calendar year. The Hounds make the trek to Sault Ste. Marie, Mich., Tuesday, Dec. 17 to face the Lakers of Lake Superior State University.
