MANKATO, Minn. – The UIndy women's soccer team made the flight up to Minnesota for their Sweet 16 matchup against No. 2 Grand Valley State, looking to capture the program's first regional championship. The Greyhounds and Lakers met just a season ago in Michigan, but today's NCAA tournament game in Minnesota went in favor of Grand Valley as they ended the Greyhounds historic season by a score of 9-0.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
Grand Valley found the back of the net early in the game, scoring in just the game's second minute. After conceding the first goal, the Hounds kept the Lakers off the board for over 20 minutes. GVSU would go on to score two more times to close out the half, going into the break with a 4-nil lead.
Â
UIndy held off the Grand Valley attack longer in the second half than they did the first as it took the Lakers seven minutes into the second to find the back of the net. Grand Valley would go on to keep finding gaps in the Greyhound defense and using their speed on the outside to keep expanding their lead. Head coach
Holly Cox was able to sub in all her reserves to play in the final game of the season as the Lakers eliminated the Hounds with a score of 9-0 when the horn sounded.
