INDIANAPOLIS – The No. 12 UIndy women's lacrosse team (2-0) made quick work of the visiting Charleston Golden Eagles (0-1) on Saturday at Key Stadium, earning a 20-2 victory behind nine combined goals from
Grace Gunneson and
Destinie Katz.
Â
The defense caused 21 turnovers, while
Peyton Romig secured 14 wins on the draw.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
It was early and often for the Greyhounds on Saturday, scoring seven times in the first 10 minutes of the game, including three goals from Gunneson and two from
Julia O'Brien. With under four minutes left in the first half,
Riley McClure forced one of her turnovers, scooped up the ground ball, and zoomed to the net for his first goal of the season.
Â
The scoring continued for UIndy in the second half, as Romig and Gunneson added to the Greyhound lead in the first 10 minutes.
Emily Meyer tallied her first goal of the season to round out the Greyhound scoring for the day, as
Fran Messura was credited with her second assist.
Â
Freshman keeper
Cassidy King stopped each Charleston shot on goal in her 43 minutes of action.
Â
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
Gunneson has now opened the 2019 campaign with two straight five-goal games. It is now the fifth time in her career the junior has netted at least five goals in a single game.
Â
Seven more points for Katz on Saturday stretches her team lead to 16 this season after totaling nine last weekend against Findlay. The Manorville, N.Y. product has now dished out at least two assists in the past 11 contests, dating back to March 31, 2018.
Â
McClure finished with three caused turnovers and two ground balls in the win. The junior's goal is her first in nine contests, dating back to April 8, 2018.
Â
The Hounds allowed just two goals, the lowest surrendered since February 18, 2017. It is the third-lowest amount the team has allowed in the program's short four-season history as UIndy yielded a single goal on back-to-back occasions on February 11 and February 18, 2017.
Â
UP NEXT
The Greyhounds will battle their first ranked opponent of the season next Saturday at No. 1 Le Moyne. The Dolphins, who have yet to play a game this season, claimed their first national title last May.
