Greyhounds go cold against Southern Indiana

INDIANAPOLIS – The UIndy women's basketball team opened up their first of four-straight home games Thursday night with Southern Indiana visiting Nicoson Hall. USI came into Thursday's night game with the Greyhounds on a two-game losing skid, looking to get back in the win column. The Screaming Eagles got past UIndy by a score of 78-43.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Greyhounds hung tough with USI through half of the first quarter, forcing Screaming Eagle turnovers and capitalizing on the other end. USI pulled away in the final four minutes of the quarter, outscoring UIndy 8-2 to lead the Hounds 18-9 at the end of one. USI took their momentum from the final half of the quarter into the second quarter, shooting 50% from the field in the period while holding UIndy to 25% shooting including missing all five of their three-point attempts. Foul trouble plagued the Hounds throughout the first half with Emma Benoit, Taylor Drury, and Liz Alsot all picking up a pair of fouls. Laura Thomas led the Hounds at the break with 10 points, getting to the free throw line six times early on, but UIndy trailed USI 44-19 going into the locker room.

The third quarter was not easy for the Greyhounds from the field, they were unable to chip away at the USI lead. The Hounds were held to 17.6% shooting in the quarter while the Screaming Eagles shot 40% from the line and sunk all four of their free throws. UIndy was more aggressive in the fourth quarter, getting to the foul line late in the game. UIndy shot eight free throws in the final quarter, the same amount as their first three quarters combined, and making seven of their eight attempts. Senior Jordan Cole and freshman Mya Scheidt came in for the final six minutes of the game for UIndy, Cole scored six points in her time on the floor while Scheidt scored three points and grabbed two boards in the closing minutes.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
-UIndy took advantage of their chances at the free throw line tonight, going 13-for-16 from the line, their fourth time in their last five games shooting above 80% at the stripe.
-The Greyhounds came away with nine steals against the Screaming Eagles. Their nine steals is their most in a GLVC game this season.
-Jordan Cole's six points was her most in a game since the Munster-native went for 11 points against Northwood on November, 19, 2017.

HOUND BYTES
Greyhounds coach Kristin Wodrich on her team's performance, "their pressure really got to us. We turned it over and tried too many cross-court passes and it hurt us. We have to fight and stick to the game plan. We have go about it possession-by-possession and you also cannot give away possessions. We tried everything we could defensively [to battle their size] and tonight it did not work so we just have to go back to the drawing board."
