ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The No. 12 UIndy women's lacrosse team (5-1, 2-0 GLIAC) scored 28 unanswered goals on Friday afternoon before ousting the Maryville Saints (1-4, 0-2 GLIAC) by a final of 29-1. The 29 goals for the Hounds is a new program record, besting last season's mark of 27 against Northern Michigan.
Destinie Katz and
Julia O'Brien each registered six points, while
Hannah Bunce caused four turnovers and picked up three ground balls.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Saints quickly answered Katz' opening netter 39 seconds later, but it was all Greyhounds the rest of the way.
Lauryn Hardoy led the way with five first-half goals, including three straight scores in the early going. Hannah Burcyzk,
Fran Messura, and
Peyton Romig also scored in the first 30 minutes, as keeper
Cassidy King made one save and caused one turnover in her only action on Friday. With her assist to Messura at the 7:12 mark, Katz recorded her 100th career point as a Greyhound.
UIndy scored 12 more times in the second half, with six coming from the trio of
Kylie Backus,
Sarah Konecny, and
Jess Soenen. Bunce added a goal to her stat line, while
Abby Byrd recorded her first collegiatiate goal at the midway point of the half.
Krista Temple and
Erika Mayette closed out the scoring for the Hounds, the latter tallying her first goal of the 2019 campaign.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
Romig matched her own program with 20 wins on the draw control, securing 10 in each half. The sophomore grabbed 10 last season in a 22-3 win at Charleston.
The team had a field day on the opposing net, recorded 58 shots and 47 on goal, both program records. The Hounds last had 58 shots a season ago at Northern Michigan, while the 47 marks on frame tops the previous total of 44, also at Northern Michigan.
Bunce now has 13 caused turnovers on the season, including 10 in the past three games. The rookie out of Columbus, N.J. also ranks second on the team with 11 ground balls.
A Watertown, N.Y. product, O'Brien has now dished out 10 helpers over the past two games. The freshman also kept her scoring streak alive, now netting at least one goal in each of her first six collegiate contests.
