Hounds take down Lakers in top-10 showdown

INDIANAPOLIS – The No. 9 UIndy men's lacrosse team (4-0) recorded its second win versus a top-10 team on the young season, topping eighth-ranked Mercyhurst, 11-9, Saturday afternoon at Key Stadium. The Greyhounds trailed the visiting Lakers (1-2) by two at the break before allowing just two goals the entire second half.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Hounds gave up 20 shots and seven goals in the first half and trailed 7-5 at intermission. The UIndy defense clamped down from that point, however, forcing nine turnovers and limiting the Lakers 14 shots and only seven on goal in the third and fourth quarters combined.

Senior keeper Jarod Kimble racked up a season-high 13 saves on the day, marking his 11th game in his career that he hit double-digits in the category.

UIndy's all-time leading goal-scorer Parker Kump scored three times, all in the second half, to lead the comeback. His final goal with 6:07 left put the Hounds up for good.

Freshman Drew Billig and senior Matthew Johnson also had hat tricks.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Kimble turned away 13 of 22 shots on goal, upping his season save percentage to .537.
- UIndy scored seven of the final nine goals on the afternoon.
- Junior Jordan McKenzie led the defense with six ground balls and added three caused turnovers. Freshman Josh Jackson had a team-high four caused turnovers while fellow-rookie Kyle Basch added five ground balls.
- Robbie Berardi and Cyle Moskowitz evenly split the 24 face-offs, with each going 7-for-12.
- Johnson has tallied three goals in each of the last two games.

HOUND BYTES
Head Coach Greg Stocks on his team's defensive effort…
"Our defense came out in the second half looking to prove themselves after that tough second quarter. We asked them to step up and they did a great job at forcing turnovers and keeping shots to a minimum."

Stocks on Kump and Billig's scoring contribution…
"It's a lot easier when we have some of goal scorers scoring goals. They stepped up, especially in the second half, and that spurted the offensive side of things."

MORE NOTES
The Greyhounds are 4-0 this season and have now won a program-best seven straight games dating back to last season ... Saturday's result nets UIndy its first-ever win versus Mercyhurst, as the Hounds were 0-3 all-time versus the Lakers heading into today … The Greyhounds' other top-10 win this year came in a 10-9 overtime final at No. 3 Seton Hill, marking the highest-ranked opponent UIndy has beaten in its four-year program history.

UP NEXT
The Greyhounds look to keep their win streak alive when they host budding-rival Young Harris in a rematch of last year's GLVC Tournament final on Saturday, March 9.
