ST. CHARLES, Mo. – The No. 9 UIndy men's lacrosse team (7-1) led for most of the game on Saturday before downing No. 14 Lindenwood (7-3) in a battle of top-15 teams, 11-6.
Â
Robbie Berardi went 18-of-21 on the faceoff, fueling the UIndy offense that has scored in double figures seven times this season. The junior specialist scooped up 12 ground balls, as well as dishing out an assist.
Â
The Hounds are now 4-0 all-time against the Lions, as the Crimson and Grey has earned a victory in each of the program's first four seasons. UIndy has limited Lindenwood to just 4.8 goals per game in the teams' history.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Greyhounds quickly jumped out to a 3-0 lead with goals from
Parker Kump,
Matthew Johnson, and
Parker Johnson, but the Lions roared back with three straight of their own late in the opening quarter.
Â
After the first 15 minutes, it was all Hounds at Hunter Stadium.
Vitto Cancila and
Jack Johnson entered the scoring column in the second quarter, as keeper
Jarod Kimble made seven saves in the first half to keep the Lindenwood attack minimal and provide the Hounds with a 6-4 lead at the break.
Â
The UIndy defense held Lindenwood to just one goal in each of the final three quarters of play. Kump completed his sixth hat trick of the season in the third frame, leading to five consecutive Greyhound goals, capped off by
Drew Billig less than five minutes into fourth quarter.
Â
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
Berardi increased his face-off success rate to 73.3 percent after securing 18 more wins inside the circle on Saturday.
Â
After setting a new program record last weekend with five assists in the win at Alabama Huntsville, Kump was once again the leader among Greyhound scorers with three. The senior also picked up three ground balls.
Â
Matthew Johnson's two goals is the first since March 2 against Mercyhurst that the senior has scored at least twice in a game. It is now the second time in 2019 that Johnson has netted a pair of goals, while he has also recorded two hat tricks as a senior.
Â
The win over Lindenwood is now the third victory over a ranked opponent this season.
Â
HOUND BYTES
"We played really well in the second half," UIndy head coach
Greg Stocks said after the win. "We made the necessary adjustments at halftime, and the guys really stepped up and locked in to give Kimble support."
