Katz, Hounds throttle Flyers to begin conference action

INDIANAPOLIS – The No. 12 UIndy women's lacrosse team (3-1, 1-0 GLIAC) put itself back on the winning track on Tuesday evening, downing first-year program Lewis (0-2, 0-1 GLIAC) by a score of 24-1 at Key Stadium.

Destinie Katz totaled a program-record 13 points in the win, scoring four times to add to her nine assists. Grace Gunneson added four goals on the night, while Peyton Romig netted three tallies.

Riley McClure matched her own program record of seven ground balls on Tuesday, while the junior defender joined Hannah Bunce and Jess Soenen each caused four turnovers.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Hounds scored three times in the first two minutes, as freshman Julia O'Brien tacked on a goal with Gunneson and Katz. In total, Katz was involved in nine of the first 11 scores, including three straight helpers from 21:34 to 18:20.

Hannah Burczyk capped off a 16-goal opening half with first score and second point of the night.

It was much of the same in the final 30 minutes, with Darby Smith and Krista Temple getting in the scoring column. Romig scored a pair ahead of Aisling Roberts and Kylie Backus' first goals of the season, with Bunce tallying the final goal of the contest.

Lewis scored on its only shot attempt with 6:22 left on a free position opportunity.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
Katz narrowly tied her own program-best mark with 10 assists, but broke Chalane Morrison's previous point total of 11 tallies.

As a means to keep warm, freshman keeper Cassidy King played up on defense, causing two turnovers and picking up a pair of ground balls. The Canandaigua, N.Y. product did not face a single shot on the night.

Bunce has now caused a turnover in each of her first four collegiate games, adding four in the win over Lewis. The rookie also scored twice and picked up a draw control.

The goal by Smith 64 seconds into the second half was the sophomore's first-career point.

UP NEXT
The Greyhounds will be back at Key Stadium this Saturday for an 11 a.m. contest against Lake Erie. The Storm are 1-1 so far this season with a loss at Grand Valley State and a close win over Charleston.
