Softball Scores 21 Runs in Doubleheader Sweep

INDIANAPOLIS – The 16th-ranked UIndy softball team (34-10, 12-4) upped its win streak to seven with a doubleheader sweep of visiting William Jewell Friday. The Greyhounds cruised to a 10-2 win in the opener before out-slugging the Cardinals, 11-10, in game two.

UIndy 10, WJC 2 (5 inn.)
UIndy jumped on the Cardinals with five unearned runs in the bottom of the first and didn't look back. Two Jewell errors stoked the rally, as UIndy needed just two hits in the frame to post the five-spot. Sophomore Haylie Foster proved the highlight with a two-run single to center.

Senior Shannon Schuetz drove in a run in each of her three plate appearances, including an RBI double in the fourth. Senior Taylor Podschweit scored three times, while sophomore Hanna Burris added a pair of singles.

Meanwhile, sophomore pitcher Halie Waters (16-6) earned the complete-game win, with a two-run home run in the fifth representing her only blemish.

UIndy 11, WJC 10
The Hounds once again put a double-digit run total on the board, but this time had to fend off a late flurry from the Cardinals. UIndy scored in each of the five innings, including four big ones in the fifth. Schuetz led off the frame with a solo shot and later Kamrie Foster delivered a two-run triple.

But Jewell came storming back with a sixth-inning salvo. Down seven heading into the frame, the Cards nearly tied it thanks in part to their third homer of the game, but UIndy ultimately ended the threat by inducing a harmless pop up with the potential go ahead run at the plate.

In addition to the aforementioned Schuetz bomb, Gianni Iannantone and Taylor Danielson delivered back-to-back solo jacks in the third inning. Both players, along with Burris, finished with two hits, while K. Foster amassed three knocks, three ribbies and two runs.

Junior Lauren Honkomp (16-3) earned the pitching win by battling through five-plus innings.
