Softball Sweeps Doubleheader on Team Ealy Day

INDIANAPOLIS – The No. 13 UIndy softball team (41-11, 19-5 GLVC) celebrated its annual "Team Ealy Day" with a pair of wins against visiting Bellarmine (22-25, 10-14) Saturday afternoon. The highlight came prior the victories when the Greyhounds presented the Ealy family with a check for $15,136.46 on behalf of UIndy softball.

The term Team Ealy was adopted in honor of brothers Quinn and Liam Ealy, nephews of Greyhound softball alum Megan Hall. Quinn is a recent cancer survivor and Liam was diagnosed with muscular dystrophy at a young age. The Hounds' total money raised this season marked a record high for team's longtime initiative, part of nearly $60,000 raised in the last seven years combined.

Between the lines, UIndy racked up 19 runs in two shutout wins, pushing their season win total above 40 for the sixth time in the last eight seasons.

UIndy  8, Bellarmine 0 (6 inn.)
Sophomore starter Halie Waters (20-7) came just shy of a perfect game, as a ground-ball single in the fourth yielded the Knights' lone base runner. Waters coaxed a 4-6-3 double play from the very next batter, as she went on to face the minimum in the abbreviated contest. She struck out seven Knights in total, with the final out of the game – a fly ball to right – representing the only ball to get out of the infield all game.

Meanwhile, UIndy's four- and five-hole hitters, Gianni Iannantone and Taylor Danielson, fueled the offense. The duo combined to go 5-for-5 with five RBIs, with Iannantone earning a pair of doubles, both to right-center.

UIndy 11, Bellarmine 0 (5 inn.)
Junior Lauren Honkomp, UIndy's game-two starter, continued the Hounds' dominance over the Knights. The Richmond, Ind., native surrendered just two singles and a walk on the way to her 19th win and sixth shutout of the season, fanning eight in five innings of work.

Iannantone continued to be red hot. Though she finally recorded an out in the fourth inning, she had two hits, two runs and a walk. She delivered her first career grand slam to end the game and run-rule the Knights in the fifth. She now has 46 ribbies on the season, good for second in the GLVC.

Hanna Burris and Haylie Foster also had a pair of hits apiece, seniors Taylor Podschweit and Shannon Schuetz each had an RBI double, while fellow-senior Brooke Riess added a late pinch-hit double.

The Greyhounds will host 22nd-ranked Southern Indiana tomorrow with the GLVC regular season title on the line. Prior to the doubleheader, UIndy will hold its annual Senior Day recognitions. First pitch from Baumgartner Field is schedule for 12 p.m. ET.
