Softball Honors Seniors, Secures Share of GLVC Regular Season Title

INDIANAPOLIS – With a doubleheader split versus 22nd-ranked Southern Indiana Sunday afternoon, the No. 13 UIndy softball team (42-12, 20-6 GLVC) earned a share of the 2019 GLVC regular season title. Heading into the final day of the regular season with a one-game lead over both USI and Missouri-St. Louis, the Greyhounds guaranteed a co-championship with a 4-2 win over the Eagles in game one.

Prior to first pitch, UIndy honored its five senior student-athletes. Katelyn Fisher, Taylor Podschweit, Brooke Riess, Shannon Schuetz and Rachel Vander Wagen have helped the Hounds to a combined 165-58 (.740) record the last four years, a span that will include four NCAA Tournament appearances and a conference tournament championship in 2016.

UIndy 4, USI 2
With her last at bat on Saturday resulting in a grand slam, sophomore Gianni Iannantone delivered a three-run blast in her first plate appearance Sunday. The shot to center field staked the Hounds to a 3-0 advantage and gave Iannantone nine RBIs in the last three games.

Pitcher Halie Waters (21-7) took over from there. The sophomore hurler went on to outduel USI ace Jennifer Leonhardt (19-7), as she scattered nine hits and two walks to earn the win. The Screaming Eagles managed a two-run third inning but do not score the rest of the game.

USI 7, UIndy 3
The Hounds once again jumped on the Eagles with a multi-run first inning. This time sophomore Haylie Foster delivered a two-run double to put UIndy in front 2-0.

But unlike game one, the lead wouldn't last as USI hung three on the board in the top of the second and two more in the third, with the latter two coming on a homer from Caitlyn Bradley.

UIndy had its chances later in the game, putting three base runners on in both the fourth and sixth innings but failed to score on both occasions. The Hounds' final run came in the fifth on a pinch hit home run by junior Cathy Skaggs.

Lauren Honkomp (19-4) took the loss – just her fourth of the year – while Haylie Foster pitched the final five frames, giving up two unearned runs.

UP NEXT
The field for the 2019 GLVC Tournament will be announced soon. Depending on how the tie breakers shake out, the Greyhounds will be either the No. 1 of No. 2 seed, with fellow regular season co-champ Missouri-St. Louis earning the other spot. The eight-team, double-elimination event is scheduled for May 2-4 in East Peoria, Ill.
