ST. LOUIS – Behind a shutout performance from starting pitcher Lauren Honkomp, the UIndy softball team (47-15) came through with a clutch 7-0 win versus Truman at the NCAA DII Midwest Regional Friday evening. The Greyhounds ended the Bulldogs' season while keeping their own championship hopes alive at the double-elimination tournament.
 
UIndy advances to face Illinois Springfield for the right to go to the Midwest Super Regional next week. The Hounds will need to defeat UIS twice tomorrow, as the Prairie Stars have yet to lose at the tournament. Weather permitting, first pitch is set for 1 p.m. ET. HOW IT HAPPENED
Honkomp rebounded from a loss to UIS earlier today by pitching a gem when her team needed it most. The Richmond, Ind., native tossed a five-hitter on the way to her eighth shutout of the season. She struck out five and walked zero while pushing her season record to 22-5.
 
Offensively, senior Taylor Podschweit gave UIndy the lead with a two-run single in the third inning before the Hounds broke it open with three runs in the fifth and two more in the sixth.
 
Sophomore Gianni Iannantone earned all three of her ribbies in the latter innings. She crushed a line drive over the center fielder's head to score Brooke Montgomery with an RBI double in the fifth, and followed that with a two-run homer in the sixth to put the game out of reach.
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Hitting in the two-spot for the first time this season, Montgomery got on base four times, finishing with a single, three walks and three runs scored.
- Catcher Taylor Danielson threw out a pair of would-be base stealers on the day, including GLVC Player of the Year Christa Reisinger, who came in 59-for-64 in stolen base attempts.
- Senior Shannon Schuetz added a two-run single in the fifth.
- UIndy eliminated the Bulldogs at both the GLVC Tournament and now the NCAA Regional. The Hounds defeated Truman in each of their six head-to-head meetings this year, part of an overall 12-game winning streak in the all-time series.
