ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla.- The perfect run of the 2019 UIndy women's tennis team came to an end Friday afternoon in the NCAA Division II Women's Tennis Championship semifinals, with the two-seed Greyhounds falling 4-0 to three-seed and #1 Lynn at Sanlando Park.
After a hard-fought doubles, the #6 Greyhounds found themselves trailing 1-0. The Fighting Knights took the first win, a 6-0 victory on the one doubles court, but the duo of
Hanna Volikova and
Alina Kislitskaya answered back with a 6-2 win at two. Lynn took the doubles point with a 6-3 win at the three position.
The Fighting Knights took a 6-1, 6-0 win at four singles and a 6-4, 6-1 win at two singles a few minutes later to go up 3-0. A 6-2, 6-4 win for Lynn at six singles solidified the match.
In the loss, both Volikova and Kislitskaya were left on the court winning their respective matches. The lone Greyhound senior Volikova won set one 7-6(1) and was up 2-1 in set two at one singles when the match was clinched, while Kislitskaya won set one 7-5 and was up 5-0 in her second set at five singles when the match finished.
The loss closes the book on the best season in UIndy Women's Tennis program history, with the Greyhounds showing what can only be described as absolute dominance for most of the year. The 24-1 final record included 17 total shutouts, including 12 straight before today's NCAA semifinal. The 24 wins on the season surpasses the previous mark of 18 set by the 2017 Greyhounds. The 2017 team also set the previous mark of 11 straight wins, with this season's 24 more than doubling that total.
The silver lining in respect to this year's finish is that aside from Volikova, UIndy returns the rest of its uber-talented lineup next year, and four of the starting six for the next two years. Midwest Region and GLVC Freshman of the Year
Nikol Alexeeva,
Anya Novikova and
Anna Valiaeva return next season with three years to play, while Kislitskaya, along with alternate
Chloe Weihs, will still be a Greyhound for two more years.
Maja Pindelska also returns next season for her final year on the court, along with alternate
Pam Brito Torres.
