Greyhounds Survive NCAA Opening Round Against Queens

INDIANAPOLIS – Brian Robb's first - and only - goal of the opening round of the 2019 NCAA Tournament sure came in a timely manner on Wednesday afternoon at Key Stadium. The freshman is no stranger to game-winners this season for the No. 6 Greyhounds, who advance to the national quarterfinals this Saturday after downing sixth-seeded and 13th-ranked Queens University of Charlotte in overtime, 16-15.

UIndy improves to 15-2 this season with its first-ever NCAA postseason victory.
  HOW IT HAPPENED
The Greyhounds and Royals traded scores the first 18-plus minutes of the game, with faceoff specialist Robbie Berardi kicking off the game with  goal just seven seconds into the opening quarter.

Shawn Kimble and Parker Kump scored the next four for UIndy, but Queens answered right back each time as the teams were knotted at five apiece early in the second frame. The visiting Royals took their turn taking their first and second leads of the game thereafter, but Kump and Parker Johnson were there for the Greyhounds to tie it at 7-7.

Queens added a pair of late first-half goals to take a 9-7 advantage into halftime, and scored less than three minutes into the third quarter to stretch its lead to three. Known as a second-half team, the Greyhounds kicked it into gear, tallying the next seven goals to grab what looked to be a commanding lead with less than 10 minutes left on the clock.

Kyle Basch and Vitto Cancila bookended the seven-goal run for the Hounds, before Kump scored his fourth of the game to give UIndy a 15-11 lead with under seven minutes to go. The Royals, also looking for their first tournament win in program history, netted the final four goals of the quarter, all in a 2:14 stretch, to force overtime.

After a couple key defensive stops, the Greyhounds stormed down the field to set up a play just before the first overtime session expired. Kump then found Robb with 11 ticks left on the scoreboard, who promptly snuck the shot past the Queens' keeper and give UIndy the 16-15 win.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
Kump tallied a game-high six points, including four goals and two assists. The senior recorded a hat trick in the first half.

Drew Billig and Shawn Kimble recorded five points apiece in the win, with the latter scoring four times and handing one helper. Billig was the opposite, adding one goal to his four assists.

Jordan McKenzie, who drew the penalty late in overtime to give the Greyhounds an extra-man opportunity (EMO), was rock-solid the entire game, causing three turnovers and scooping up six ground balls.

After a sluggish start due to a thriving Queens attack, senior keeper Jarod Kimble made 14 saves in net on Wednesday. The Rochester, N.Y. product also tallied three ground balls and one caused turnover.
