KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Another overtime game, but yet another result for the UIndy men's basketball team (16-5, 8-5 GLVC) escaped the barbecue capital of the world with a 86-78 victory at Rockhurst (13-8, 9-4 GLVC) on Thursday evening.
Â
Jimmy King finished the night with 14 points and 10 assists, while
Trevor Lakes drilled five-of-seven 3-point attempts on his way to 21 tallies. But the answer on Thursday was
Marcus Latham, who delivered 25 points off the bench in the final 25 minutes to lead the Greyhounds to victory.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
It was naturally a game of runs on Thursday evening, as the intense conference battle saw 10 ties and 19 lead changes before the Greyhounds grounded the Hawks for the road win, outscoring the hosts 14-6 in the extra session. Latham sunk a 3-pointer just 21 seconds into overtime to spark a 7-0 run, which would ultimately decide the game as King and Lakes both recorded a pair of tallies before Rockhurst scored at the 2:12 mark of the period.
Â
It appeared all but over with 28 seconds remaining in the second half as the Hawks clung to a 71-67 victory before Latham grabbed the offensive board and put it back with the foul. After a missed free throw by Hawks' Curtis Lewis, Lakes banked one in from the paint to knot the game at 72 apiece and send the game to overtime.
Â
Before Latham engraved his name into everyone's memory who was in attendance, it was the Lakes show in the first half, scoring 11 points on three-of-three shooting from beyond the arc. Trailing 36-32 with moments before the break, Lakes became the sixth Greyhound ever to drill 200 3-pointers in a UIndy uniform.
Â
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
-Surprisingly enough, Latham's 25 points is just the second-most he has scored in a single game this season, nearly matching his 28 at Lake Superior State on Dec. 17. The Alton, Ill., native logged 26 minutes of action on Thursday at Rockhurst.
-King's double-double was his second this season, and first since the Greyhounds' win at Cedarville on Nov. 23.
-Lakes now has 203 career 3-pointers after five more against the Hawks and sits just 11 away from matching recent alum
Eric Davidson's total of 214
-
Cory Miller Jr. recorded a game-high 43 minutes on Thursday, finishing with 13 points, three assists and three boards

HOUND BYTES
Latham: "I don't think anybody in this league can guard me and I go in with that mindset every game. As soon as went into overtime, we told ourselves that was their best basketball they were going to play and we have yet to show them our best shot, and we showed them our best in overtime and that's why we came out with the win."
Â
Head coach
Stan Gouard: "This league, man. This league is unbelievable. We were tough tonight and played through a lot of adversity.
Â
"[Marcus] is a bucket. We ran him off a lot of ball screens and made some sound decisions late in the shot clock."
