EDMOND, Okla. – In the final day of the ITA Indoor Championships, the No. 4 UIndy women's tennis team completed a top-five team finish after defeating No. 6 Saint Leo on a 4-1 final score.
The doubles matches featured three close games between the two teams, with UIndy winning the majority to take the team point. The No. 3 team in Division II of
Nikol Alekseeva and
Anna Novikova were the only match to avoid extra points, taking down Nina Furmaniak and Kristyna Jurkova on a final score of 6-4.
Maria Solnyshkina and
Anna Valiaeva couldn't hold down Marta Vicens Miquel and Anna Marija Bukina as the Lions stole the second match 7-5.
Alina Kislitskaya and
Maja Pindelska were able to push UIndy to their first point on the day, winning a nail-biter 7-6 against Molly Helgesson and Nastasia Jedrychowski.
UIndy made quick work of the singles matches, taking the team victory within the first four concluded matches. Saint Leo's Furmaniak gave the Lions the edge to start, clearing Solnyshkina quickly on a final score of 6-1, 6-1. The Greyhounds answered with victories in the next three matches, starting with Valiaeva's 6-1, 6-3 score over Marija Bukina. No. 19 Vicens Miquel was overcome by No. 20 Kislitskaya, as the Hound finished the day with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over her counterpart. No. 24 Novikova sealed the victory off her 6-4, 6-1 final score on No. 31 Jurkova. Two matches were left unfinished, including No. 2 Alekseeva's 7-6, 5-0 lead over Helgesson and Pindelska's 5-7, 2-1 match against Jedrychowski.
The Greyhounds will be back in action during the week of spring break, competing in the Spring Fling Team Tournament in San Antonio, Texas. The event will take place from March 13 through March 15.
