LIBERTY, Mo. – The UIndy men's basketball team (6-9, 6-9 GLVC) delivered when it counted Saturday afternoon, surpassing and then holding off host William Jewell (3-12, 3-12) in a 68-65 road win. A late and-1 from
Kendrick Tchoua gave the Greyhounds the lead while the Cardinals missed a potential game-tying fee throw in the final seconds.
Â
INS & OUTS
Down one with the ball in the waning seconds, Tchoua swooped in and grabbed an offensive rebound, earning the hoop and the harm to put the Hounds up 64-63 with just 22.9 seconds left. The sophomore from Silver Springs, Md., calmly knocked down the ensuing free throw to up the lead to a deuce.
Â
Â
A clutch defensive stop followed and a quick foul sent
Dee Montgomery to the line, but the senior missed the back end of the double bonus, keeping the door open for the Cardinals.
Â
With 7.4 to go, Jewell grabbed the board and pushed for a quick 3. It was Jordan Jermain who shot and missed the triple attempt, but got the whistle the Cards needed, sending the freshman to the foul line with a chance to tie it with 2.1 on the clock. He made the first two before timeout was called by the UIndy bench.
Â
"That was a great recommendation by my assistant,
Mike Burris," Head Coach
Paul Corsaro later revealed of the timeout decision. "I have to give Mike all the credit there."
Â
The strategy paid off perfectly, as Jermain returned to the stripe and came up short on his final attempt. Jewell desperately stopped the clock one final time by fouling
Jesse Bingham with a mere 1.1 left. The hometown product walked the length of the court and sank both freebies before Jewell's last-second heave missed the mark, sealing a key road win for the Greyhounds.

HOUND BYTES
Head coach Paul Corsaro with his thoughts on the game…
"I'm so proud of our effort. We got punched in the mouth there in the second half. The cool thing is, that was the same punch that Truman threw in the first half on Thursday and we didn't respond so great then. I really thought we grew up from Thursday to today."
Â
Corsaro on some of his bench contributions…
I thought
Josiah Tynes brought an individual defense presence that really ignited our team defense. And he got some timely buckets with a 3 in the first half and a big and-1 later in the second."
Â
"
Ben Nicoson was also a guy that really stepped up. When Dee went down (with an injury), Ben came in the game and we went on a run. We had a +13 with him on the floor, and he filled that role really nicely for Dee."
Â
UP NEXT
With just three weeks left in the season, the Hounds return to Nicoson Hall next week to host a pair of GLVC contenders, as Rockhurst (5th in the conference point rankings) comes calling Thursday, followed by a visiting from Southwest Baptist (4th) on Saturday.
