Softball Extends Streak With Two More Shutouts

INDIANAPOLIS – The No. 11 UIndy softball team (15-2) upped its winning streak to eight games Saturday, blanking the visiting Illinois Springfield Prairie Stars in both ends of a doubleheader. Starting pitchers Hallie Waters and Kenzee Smith combined to allow just three hits in 12 combined innings, while sophomore slugger Emily O'Connor delivered two of the Greyhounds' four home runs on the day.

GAME 1 | UIndy 10, UIS 0 (5 innings)
The Hounds combined a near no-hitter defensively with an offensive assault from the plate to run-rule the Stars in five innings.

Both O'Connor and Lexy Rees had home runs to power the offense, with Gianni Iannatone adding a three-run double to get the scoring started in the first. Meanwhile, Waters (8-1) did not allow a single hit until the fifth and ultimately final frame.

GAME 2 | UIndy 7, UIS 0
The story line continued in game two, with a complete-game shutout from the circle and two more dingers jumping off the UIndy bats.

Freshman Kenzee Smith and her stellar change-up remained a mystery to opposing hitters, as the hometown product upped her record to a perfect 6-0  in seven scoreless. She struck out nine and walked zero while allowing two harmless hits.

O'Connor blasted her second homer of the day with a solo shot in the second, while Haylie Foster sent a three-run bomb to deep center to cap the scoring in the sixth.

Foster finished with a team-high five ribbies on the day, while O'Connor reached base five times in six plate appearances.
