GREENWOOD, Ind. - Now moving to 9-2 on the season, the UIndy men's tennis team won against the University of Illinois-Springfield Prairie Stars 5-2 under the sunny skies at Center Grove High School's tennis courts. The team comes off the announcement of multiple players hitting the top 50 in the singles rankings with senior Renato Lima topping off the Hounds at No. 27.Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
A clean sweep of doubles started the afternoon for the Hounds against the Stars. It launched off with a No. 1 doubles win by sophomore Tom Zeuch and freshman Yoaan Viel notching the first win 6-2. The senior pair of Renato Lima and Agustin Gascia followed up with a 7-5 win. Finally to edge out doubles action sophomore Nikolaj Talimaa and freshman Pedro Franca fought to secure a 7-6 win with a 3 point super tiebreaker to lock in the doubles sweep.Â
Viel continued his excellence from doubles and carried it over into the No. 2 singles spot with a straight sets win 6-2 and 6-4.Talimaa would keep that ball rolling as he would finish in straight sets as well with a win 6-4, 6-1.
The Hounds continued to win with sophomore Jason Gerweck in the No. 5 spot showing complete control with a pair of 6-1 set victories.Â
Gascia battled in the No. 4 singles spot but eventually fell in three sets 6-2, 6-7 and 5-2. Freshman David Julia Melero fell in the No. 6 spot in straight sets 1-6, 0-6. Closing out the evening, Lima survived the endurance match against his Prairie Stars opponent. He rose in the first match 6-4 before dropping the second 4-6. He battled through the heat and came out with another victory on the season 7-5.Â
UP NEXT
The Hounds will stay in Greenwood and will hope to repeat their performance as they take on the McKendree Bearcats.
