Hounds Start Softball Regional with a Bang

ALLENDALE, Mich. – The No. 7 UIndy softball team (44-6) kicked off the 2021 NCAA Midwest Regional with a statement Thursday, delivering a dominating 17-0 rout of sixth-seeded Ohio Dominican. Setting a program record for runs in an NCAA Tournament game, the Greyhounds move on to tomorrow morning's winners' bracket contest.

Awaiting the Hounds will be the regional host, top-seeded and 13th-ranked Grand Valley State. First pitch from GVSU Softball Field is scheduled for 11 a.m. ET. UIndy won the coin flip and will be the home team on the scoreboard.

INS & OUTS
After losing 4-3 at ODU less than a month ago, the Greyhounds came ready to mash.

After a two-run single from catcher Lexy Rees in the bottom of the first, the Hounds broke it wide open in the third inning; UIndy sent 16 hitters to the plate, racking up nine hits and 10 runs to all both clinch it. Rees and Emily O'Connor both had two knocks in the frame, while Taylor Danielson and Haylie Foster had a pair of ribbies apiece.

Meanwhile, the pitching trio of Kenzee Smith, Hallie Waters and Amy Kaniewski combined for a one-hit shutout. Smith (23-2) got the starting nod, putting in three-plus innings to get the W. Waters came on to get five outs, and Kaniewski finished the job by retiring the lone batter she faced.

INSIDE THE BOX
- Ten UIndy batters finished with at least two hits, two RBIs, two walks or two runs scored.
- UIndy amassed as many hits as ODU had at bats.
- GLVC Player of the Year Gianni Iannantone had a game-high four runs, while Rees led the Hounds with three hits and three RBIs.
- UIndy delivered two pinch hits in the fourth, including a single from Lucy Garrett and a two-run double from Maddy Stout.
- The Greyhounds' run total marked their highest scoring output since hanging 17 on Lake Erie in March of 2013.
