MIDLAND, Mich. - It was a great start to the NCAA DII Midwest Regional for the 1-seeded and 11th-ranked UIndy men's tennis team Sunday, as they swept Hillsdale College 4-0. This came off the back of a very solid singles performance by the Hounds with all matches wrapping up in the minimum two sets.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Hounds started out only needing one match win to secure the doubles point as Hillsdale would not field a No. 3 doubles team to face off with
Nikolaj Talimaa and
Pedro Franca. The pair that came to that challenge was
Renato Lima and
Maximilian Witthaus, as they struck down their Charger opponents, 6-4.
Tom Zeuch and
Yoann Viel did not finish their match.
Singles was a similar story as the Chargers entered a man down, forfeiting a point to the Hounds. After the by-forfeit win of
Jason Gerweck, the No. 26 singles player in the country, Lima made quick work of his Hillsdale challenger, dropping only one game across the two sets to win 6-0, 6-1. And to clinch and move the Hounds into the final, Viel struck the finishing blow with a 6-2, 6-0 win to close the evening out. Zeuch, Talimaa and
Dominik Koenig did not finish their matches.
UP NEXT
It is a rematch of the GLVC Championship game with the Hounds facing off with the Southwest Baptist Bearcats in the Midwest final on Monday. They will stay in Midland, Mich., on the campus of Northwood University and kick off at 11 a.m. ET.
